Brooklyn Nine-Nine 8x01 FULL REACTION

I'm so ready for this final season!!!

It's so weird not having Rosa on the 99, but I totally understand the reason why she wanted to leave.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine 8x01 FULL REACTION

Comments

I'd agree with you if the issue was just that some cops are bad and/or racist. But it isn't. The bigger issue is that the whole system is and has always been designed to oppress black people, as well as other minorities, and protect those 'bad cops' you're talking about. Of course there are some good cops, probably even a majority, but as long as they keep working within this system, without any change, then I think they are exacerbating the problem. Trying to fix things from within is all well and good, but unless you have a clear plan for how exactly you're going to change things, on a large scale, are you actually helping or are you just continuing to prop up the system while convincing yourself you're doing the right thing? I think this episode was about exactly that, shifting Jake's (and the audience's) perception of the issue from the 'good/bad cop' thing to focusing more on the systemic issues at the root of it. He goes from being defensive and a little performative about being 'one of the good ones', to really listening, taking a step back, and seeing the bigger picture. You're probably right that the polarization of opinions on the issue isn't helping things, in fact it's leading to a lot of defensiveness from cops which just grows the 'bad cops' numbers and makes them double down. But it's important to recognise that this didn't just suddenly happen. The anger and hardline attitude towards the police over the last few years is the result of decades of taking a more nuanced approach and being completely ignored, with nothing ever changing. At least this way people are taking notice, whether it's for better or for worse remains to be seen...

I think this is the worst episode of the show. It took me like three or four sittings to get through it. Obviously this came out shortly after all the police stuff was going on across the US, and I respect that, but this just did not work for me. It felt like one of those awkward videos you had to watch in school that taught you a lesson (don’t do drugs or something like that that) where the acting is really bad and you you know it was just made to teach a point to kids. This episode felt like a response to what was happening and not an episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The other issue I had is that I kinda… don’t agree… with the characters? Yes, there are some bad cops out there, and that is a problem. They carry a gun, and therefore have a lot of power, and that is a problem. However, there are also a lot of good cops out there that do the right thing and want to make the world a better, safer place. It generally seems like most people in the wake of all the issues in the last couple years either fall on the side of cops are good or cops are evil. That’s such a narrow way of looking at things. We can say cops are good while also acknowledging that their could be some issues and that things could change and be improved. Every profession has good and bad people in it, and we’d like to limit the bad. But it doesn’t mean we should focus on the few bad while ignoring all the good. They ALL matter! People say some cops are racist (which is true and not good), but then turn around and do the things they are accusing the cops of by saying that all cops are bad/evil. They are just being “racist” against cops! Do people not realize this? I guess it’s just like politics though where everybody picks and side and there is no middle ground and there isn’t a lot of rational thought… Like I said, not all cops are bad, and I think Rosa and Jake are good ones! Obviously the show is a comedy so they are goofy and whatnot, but they have always tried to do the right thing when it matters. They are not the problem. The episode made it out like they are bad cops, or that at least by continuing to be cops they are exacerbating the problem. Since they are good cops, couldn’t continuing to be cops and trying to fix things from within be helping the problem? I just don’t agree with what Rosa and the show were saying at all. The show has made “statements” on “issues” before such as Rosa being gay, which l thought was done well. I thought this one missed the mark entirely. Also, as a side note (and I am saying this before watching your reaction, so I don’t remember how much this episode does this), I also don’t think it’s healthy to promote and encourage the 1/0, yes/no, us/them, my side/your side mentality. Every topic and issue can always have varying opinions, and that is okay! Healthy debate and compromise is always needed. This is why I stay out of and know NOTHING about politics. I know that I have a duty to vote and all that jazz, but I never get involved with that stuff because it drives me insane the way people behave as soon as you so much as mention politics. Why can’t people have a healthy debate? Not everything is black and white! There is often a middle ground that contains something good and the truth! :]
