What is the Worst Stan Lee Trope? (CLOSED)

Comments

It's why I picked the overwritten prose. I love reading as much as anyone but I'm not reading comic books to spend all this time looking at words.

Agreed. And to be clear, I’m hardly condoning Reed’s behavior (not the only example, but the most present one in our reading). Especially post marriage. Regardless of the state of women’s rights at the time, I think he treats her poorly. But I do think it’s worth keeping in mind that this might be less a reflection on Stan himself, and more a sign of how things were. It definitely shows how far we’ve come, and I’m sure we’ll see that evolve with this and other issues as we go.

It might be a sign of the times, but it still is alienating to women, and there was plenty of cultural support for women's rights at this time in the U.S. Of course culture was a factor but that doesn't mean people aren't allowed to feel mad about it. I still feel mad about Jim Crow laws and those were abolished 55 years ago. We can acknowledge Stan Lee became more progressive as he grew older (and honestly, I don't know how much better his writing became for women) while still keeping our eyes open about how the way he wrote women held 50% of the population in disdain.
