Book Club: FOR THE EMPEROR! - Patreon Early Access

Well, this took a while. What with Xmas, New Year, everyone getting ridiculously busy with work and various scheduling bumps, it's taken us a good month to organise this. But here we are, in the SAME ROOM, talking about For The Emperor for an hour!

Currently only available to Patreon supporters, this will go live on the regular channel in a few weeks.

And watch out for the next poll where you can vote on what book we try next.

From the discussion in the vid about having 3 central female characters in a 2003 book one thing that I think was a nice touch is in the Sulla sections she always phrases it as "the brave women and men of the imperial guard" in contrast to all the other GW writing ordering it as "men and women". Also definitely second the suggestion the Warhammer Crime books as giving a look at the shitness of existence in the Imperium on a day to day level.

Glad you enjoyed the books and certainly would be interested in seeing your thoughts on some of the other initial ones (mainly Death or Glory, because Orks), although I will say I felt that the later ones started to feel a bit repetitive and by the numbers. In terms of the Tau books, I've read a couple but didn't exactly love them - I felt there was a lot of canon to keep up with and I didn't really identify with any of the characters, but I defer to others who have better knowledge of the plots. In terms of the recommendations, Aaron Dembski Bowden is always a good shout, and I've heard a lot of good things about Spear of the Emperor - if you ever want to get into Chaos and don't want to wade through the heresy, Night Lords is definitely a good starting point. Between Honourbound and Mark of Faith, I'd definitely pick Mark of Faith, both because it manages to make Sororitas human and picks apart some of the issues with faith in the 40k universe, and also because it actually manages to put in a really touching aspect of romance which chimes nicely with the themes in the book. Honourbound could go on to be a really interesting series, but I was put off a bit by it being in the present tense throughout, and the fact that it seemed to be sharing a lot of the story beats of First and Only without doing as much worldbuilding. Ravenor is certainly interesting and both thematically and stylistically bridges the gap between Eisenhorn and Bequin - that being said, it's hardly a happy story (even compared to Hereticus) and you may want a bit more of a palate cleanser in the middle. As always, I will wave the flag for Warhammer Crime or Gaunt's Ghosts but very happy with whatever comes up. It would also be interesting to have a focused Q & A for you and Mira once the book club gets a bit further along to specifically chat what you've read :)

Glad you enjoyed the book, all the Cain books are a fun time! Spears of the Emperor is a solid pick, i'd probably go with that for Astartes focused books 👍 As far as Tau are concerned the farsight trilogy is the main one, which aren't high art, but are definitely peak 'anime' 😆 For an actually good Tau adjacent book 'Fire Caste' by Peter Fehevari is my pick, but it's more a spooky apocalypse now style story.
