THUMBNAIL HELP

Hiya - I'm having trouble with thumbnails. Generally, some of mine have way more words on them than can actually be read on a tiny phone screen, and I'm very aware that I'm repeating words that always appear under the video anyway! Do I even need words?

So here's an upcoming video. What thumbnail is the most attention-grabbing? Bear in mind that underneath it will be text that reads 'EVERY HORUS HERESY FACTION in Fifteen Minutes'

Opinions?

I like the first one, and that line "in 15 minutes" it's what makes the video specific and more likely to be seen (there's a ton of faction videos out there).

Ok great, stick with the current method then! Thanks!

Completely agree with this.

Nick Johnstone

I like the first one, but I don't know what works best for youtube.

The first one is great, I think stick with that one

Definitely the first one - easy to read on my phone, and has more information than the others.

Definitely the first one. I know you risk doubling up on the words but titles aren't what grab people's attention; thumbnails are. If I looked at the third one that just says "FACTIONS" and it has a space marine on it, I'd think it's for 40k. The last one gives no context so I imagine people might scroll right past it, and the second one still isn't specific enough for people to know what they're in for. The first one, while it may seem "busy", still gives the most information while having enough visual cues to catch a viewer's eye.

Hawk

I like the longer text one

First or second one. Keep the Horus Heresy in the thumbnail will help all the people who don't know much about HH.

The first one. Basically the thumbnail and the text title are two different mediums, and it's good to broadcast the same message in multiple ways (higher chance people receive it). I am often confused by videos where the image title and the text title are not the same. That might just be me, but then again, I'm one of your patreons, so maybe there's more people like me in your target audience ;)

Lotsofspoons

The first one I think!

#1. I find the fact that it's "in 15 minutes" just as much a part of the video's raison d'etre as the fact that it's "every faction". Maybe more so, given how much of your content deals with providing background and context to 40k.

First one works well, the second one is also good - I would want the Heresy logo there

Nick Ball

I'd say the first one works for me and isn't too busy at all

I like the first one, with the full title. Simply gives more information, and the large "Every Faction" still catches the eye. In any case, definitely keep the Heresy logo, though.

This is totally legible on my phone screen, but you could try what I've seen some youtubers do with their thumbnails - provide a definite answer/reply to the title below. So you could have; "every faction in fifteen minutes" as the title and "yes, all of them" as the thumbnail text. Music youtuber Adam Nealy does it all the time in his stuff

I like the "every faction in 15 minutes" - let's me know what it's about but also that this isn't a full, in depth look that's going to take 2 hours

At least on my phone app the text below the thumbnail is relatively small, thus does not grab the attention as easily as a "EVERY FACTION" does across the thumbnail.

I think a few words are good, but the 15 minutes isn't necessary. I'd keep in the Horus heresy bit as it's not immediately clear that it's 30k and not 40k, particularly for people just finding the hobby.
