Jason's comment on if an alien attack (or the existence of aliens) would work made me reflect on a bunch of things, and also on how the movie version substitutes this with terrorism and how that changes the narrative (on what is alien, on how feasible would a long term solution to peace would be, etc.). I was also reminded of UK LeGuin's novella "The Lathe of Heaven", about a man that can change the world just by dreaming and how the cost of eliminating war (first, by bringing aliens to the moon, then by having them actually attack it, then "breeding" war out of humans) has unexpected and painful consequences. As with anything I've read from her, it will fundamentally change the way you think. I really recommend it if you want to think a bit more about this topic.
