Move it, Football Head!

Can you see the difference?

Most of the early changes I'm making are fixing the way I drew Annie. I had a vision in mind of drawing a kind of abstract character, like something I'd see in Dexters Lab, Powerpuff Girls, and other cartoons I loved at the time. The problem was, I wasn't really experienced in drawing like that!

Hopefully this first page of the comic shows the difference a few lines can make. Annie is still the same character, and despite her cranium being a little more regularly shaped, she still has a bit of a football head.

The rest of the art is largely untouched, but I'll share anything that I'm changing, or stuff that was just objectively incorrect.

You might also notice I toned down the amount of bold text I used in the beginning too. It was something else I thought was needed at the time to emphasize character voice.

Move it, Football Head! Move it, Football Head!

I'm ambivalent about the bold text, but I have to admit it's no longer as popular as it used to be. Can see the same thing in videogame, emphasis (usually in the form of color) was all over the scene in the 2000s, in games and comics alike. These days it's seen quite less. ...I might miss it.

I think someone might almost be able to interpret the older Annie as either angry or suspicious or something - I don't think that's possible anymore?

Brett Peirce

changing the text is a bold move (:D)

God, how long has it been since I actually read Gunnerkrigg Court? Like, right after that robot kissed Loup. Really need to set aside some time for a big catch up.

I just finished collecting all the existing hardcovers *sobs*

Alex

Love your content Tom!

Looks good! But, does this mean I have to buy the early books again? *sigh, opens wallet*

David Bingenheimer

I agree! Second shadow always stood out for me for this reason. It really does capture how Annie talks in the beginning, and I loved it

Good change: You increased the left margin of the speech balloons. Bad change: There's an awful lot of variability in the size of that margin. I get that in the last panel you're constrained on all sides by the art, but in the panel above that, you didn't have to have such an enormous margin. Sorry for nitpicking. What can I say, I'm OCD.

Brian Harvey

I'm glad the football head did disappear!

William Cole

I think this is a good balance to make the old art a little less jarring without rewriting history.

Max Goldstein

I can certainly see the differences looking at them side-by-side but if you'd just posted the updated and left it at that I'd never have guessed the artwork was different. If anything, it might have been the BOLD lettering being different that might have caught my eye 😏

AstroChaos

I don't see any "Han shot first!" issues here, just looks a bit better. Yay.

Rocketguy

I have been curious since I saw some chatter to this effect on Twitter; have you ever updated the art before this point?

D. Alfonso

Me too. I agree that there was too much, but maybe keep "second shadow" boldface?

Brian Harvey

Good to see the drawing changes. I kind of liked the bold words.

Marian

Excited to see the rest of the updates!

Ama

Tbh the updated version how the old one looked in my mind's eye when recalling it. It fits right in perfectly!

Forest-Lark

if you look at this on a PC, you can hold the left or right arrow keys on the keyboard and it will speed through both making it easy to spot the differences!!! You changed her hair and all the lettering as well as her eyes as previously mentioned!!!!!!

Sparkax

Super interesting Tom! The updated Annie looks a lot more like the Annie we know and love today, but still keeps the "wonky perspective" style you had in the early comic days. Really looking forward to seeing more!!

fx_in_mind

How exciting to see Gunnerkrigg Court back in print!! :D I like these updates - it makes sense to touch things up a little bit while keeping most of it the same! :D

Fix what you think needs fixing. Happy to peak behind the curtain on these. I agree that removing the bolds is a good idea.

Zelmor

I'm so excited Tom, you have no idea!!!!

Angle on the inner eye is a little less severe
