STUDIO...NUT! I see them doing a new series soon. Deca-Dance or something. Looks interesting

One hell of an... /explosive/ way to start off Youjo Senki, that's for sure! Count me in, Studio NUT, I am excited to see where this series goes, cause the animation was beautiful, the OSTs built the tension and the art style was certainly pleasing to the eye! :D

Guess it's about time I started Saga of Tanya the Evil, been on my "watch eventually" list for forever, but there's certainly no better time than the present when it comes to starting it! Gotta get caught up so I can watch Isekai Quartet and its eventual Season 2!

Good ol' WW1-esque trench warfare... but with magic~!

As others have said, the light novel is actually really detailed. The anime doesn't really go into it. Here are some examples. The reason Tanya has a psychotic look whenever she fights is that she is high as hell on LSD. She uses it heavily to get through battles. Her slasher smile at the end is anime only. You were right to mention that the atmosphere gets really thin at high altitudes. If I remember correctly, that's the reason the mages have altitude limits. You can go higher using spells to compress the air around you and create an artificial atmosphere. However, this introduces difficulties that are hard to get into without spoiling things. Actually, that's all I can think of for now. The point is, the light novel author put a lot of thought into this, and the anime doesn't reflect it that well.

Oh yeah there is one more Thing that they NEVER mentioned in the Anime... The Reason why Tanya looks so aggressiv and " high" when she fights: As a child, Tanya didn't possess much physical strength. However, she is able to enhance her basic physical abilities through magical enhancement spells. This allows her to engage in proper close quarter combat and wield a rifle like any other soldier. She boost herself to the Maximum sometimes shortly before she goes into a Fight, especially if she fights against other Mages like she did in this Episode.

I hate the visual change for Viktoriya . She had a very appealing character design in the LN. In the anime she just looks weird.

Its 1924 actually, and i think its a Mix of WW1 Setting ( in the beginning especially) and later in the Story ( mostly represent in the Light Novel Volumes after it, from what little Details i read) it gets more into WW2 Setting. Edit: A interesting small Information is, that the Author decided to change Tanyas Appearance and even Viktorias Appearance compared to the Light Novel. Tanyas Appearance in the Light Novel in Illustrations: https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/youjo-senki/images/a/a5/Vol6clean.png/revision/latest?cb=20170119003736 In her current incarnation, the Light Novel describes Tanya as a little girl with a very petite build for her age that could be mistaken to be even younger. She has blonde hair, and her eyes are a cold blue. She has a fairy-like face, which looks ill when coupled with her pale complexion. Visha described her face as beautiful and doll-like, but giving off a vampire-like impression because of her sharp eyes.

Mathias

Yeah, its WWI. It said 1929 I believe.

Anriku

I think it's more WW1 than WW2, with the whole trench war between France and Germany and the development of aviation, here replaced by mages.
