Currently, I am anime only with Fire Force, but if I had to speculate /where/ the "Massive Adolla Burst" that caused the Great Cataclysm from 250 years ago, originated from... I'd say the "Sun" itself, the "Massive Burning Ball of Fire" that provides lights to the world... Earth is currently ablaze, on course to become "another Sun/Star" as Rekka mentioned way back, the goal of the White Clads is to finish the Incineration of Humanity, to set the last bastions of Humanity ablaze... for me, it makes sense that it could be that the "Sun" is the cause and their goal, our IRL Sun has even been shown to have "Solar Flares" that could theoretically reach us and incinerate us if it was ever that bad.
