Q&A part 2

Part two of our Q&A this month.

Q&A part 2

Comments

Hannah, I had a cockatiel that was a normal grey, probably not inbred like some of the fancy colors. Also he was 29 when he died earlier this year. Very old school little guy. I wouldn't say that tiels are dumb, but they do seem different from other parrots in a lot of ways. I always felt that whistling could be an aggressive behavior in cockatiels. Mine whistled to strangers and I knew he hated strangers. It seemed to me that he was whistling to show off how macho he was. They whistle to impress females of course but they also do it to intimidate other males. Kind of like, "See how well I whistle? I could get all of the girls and you can't touch me. So step off!" This video captures it in action as one male shuts another male down with his whistling prowess: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pJq8R_Y0CM

I don’t know why but my birds don’t want to warm up to TOPs pellets. When I first introduced them, they ate it for a few days and decided they didn’t want too. 😑 I powder it over stuff and put it in the birdie bread they do eat. My parrotlet was weaned on Pretty Bird pellets which isn’t ideal but at least it’s something. My cockatiel is stubborn and refuses. It’s gonna be a loooong haul. My avian vet also recommended Harrison’s super fine for pellets to replace seed diet (which she wasn’t on anyway) because she been having liver issues which as you say a little puzzling. I did buy it to transition from the colourful Pretty bird pellets to Harrison’s and to TOPs hopefully. Fuji sounds like such a character from your stories (Horror-mones!). It was a good reminder that Toucans are predators! And by the way, my cockatiel is not friendly like most and quite smart! When he saw a toy poodle for the first time, he freaked. When he saw my parrotlet for the first time, he hissed at her. Now he ignores her unless my parrotlet tries to pick fight (90% of the time 😂).

Ahahaha, yeah they are pretty doofy birds. He's AMAZING at training, but he still acts like an airhead in general. I definitely don't want him to socialize with my Caique. Even the Caiques playing would get him hurt, let alone anything aggressive. I just wanted to see if there was possibly a way to help him understand some things want to attack him 😂 I will sneak him in my carry on next time I'm up there and watch him likely get his butt kicked by little Blue 😅
