Answers about our Seasonal Feeding System

Please show lots of love for the fact that I got Patty to even do this, lol! Sorry if your questions came in after we read the ones that were there and had filmed. xo
If you don't yet have our seasonal feeding system, get it here!
Hubby is right - it's once cup of already cooked grain. So if you had a bowl of 5 cups of cooked rice, it would be taking one cup from it and using that amount. ;)

In your recipes, when you say "1 cup cooked rice/pasta/millet, etc" does it mean we have to cook 1 cup of rice/etc or we have to cook it and take 1 cup of it once cooked. My husband and I are making the summer chops and he's arguing with me. I believe its 1 cup uncooked and then cook it, he thinks its 1 cup once cooked hahahahaha please help !

Hey Nancy! If you wanna DM me, that would be easier. Happy to help - let me know what your bird's current diet is when you write in and I will offer some suggestions! Also if you have my seasonal feeding cookbook already too.

I absolutely cannot get my macaw or conure to touch your pellets. Mix them with applesauce or mixed grain-type oatmeal, hide with things they supposedly like, no luck. I bought one bag and gave up. I decided months later to try again, still with no luck. Short of starving them so they have no choice, not sure what to do.

Btw I absolutely love how much time and energy you have invested into making these books the absolutely best they can be for all of our birds. Love you people.

On the note of making smaller batches: Giving all the amounts in your seasonal recepies in veight measurement would be super helpful! Grams or whatever you use (I can convert). I do only itty bitty small batches that lasts three days for one small parrot. My kakariki does not like the consistency of thawed veggies. Sooo... I have to guess amounts completely. It's bumming me out. I just want to do right for my little bird.

As far as pasta, I found Chickpea pasta that I use, is that a good option?

Could be fungus gnats. I would try the vinegar in a shallow dish covered with plastic wrap and see if that attracts them. One time I got them in some potting soil and they were in all my houseplants. I had to order sticky traps that time and made sure the bird wasn’t in the same room with any sticky traps!

I had actually asked Patty that and she was not a fan of everything in that seed mix and always prefers to make her own (kinda like I did with Blueberry) so I'd stick to the recipe.

I get little gnat looking things but not quite fruit flies around my garbage if wet stuff gets left too long without being taken out.

This video is WONDERFUL! Thank you for answering my question about pellets for parrotlet mutations... I will continue to feed just a small amount. 🦜

OMG YES, the fruit flies love the vegetables. I follow the recipe to a T and they hang around all night waiting for the chop! And then my parrot cleans his beak on the cage and the fruit flies are all over it again.
Thank you so much for doing this!

Loved this video!! I don't have my bird yet (I will at the beginning of next month), but I'm soaking up all these tips and tricks, especially after having my first consult with Jamie. I love your video appearances, Patty and I think you do a phenomenal job getting your point across. Where have you found the best research on parrot diets? I'm a vet tech and animal nutrition is in my little wheelhouse as I discuss nutrition with cat and dog clients at least once every day, so I'm very interested on where to go if I have a question about parrot nutrition if I need an answer faster than you guys can make/edit a video on that topic. 😆 Thank you so much for all your videos! Love the way you guys are together in videos! 💖

I was going to include this. Fruit flies are very prevalent in the coastal region of SC where I live. They're just basically attracted to anything with starches or sugar...especially if it sits out for any length of time during the warmer months. :)

I noticed on my bag of TOPs All in One seed mix, that the seeds it has are actually most of the grains recommended in the feeding system. Ingredients are: Barley, Rye Berries, Spelt, Kamut, Buckwheat, Millet, and Pumpkin Seeds. The barley is not hulled but if the mix is soaked overnight it gets soft enough to cook or feed raw. I use it as one of my sprout seed mixes. There are some wheat seeds, but maybe they would sub for the pasta? Am I trying to get too far off track into my own recipe concoctions again?

I was wondering the same thing about the juice before and after freezing. I thought about cooking the grains in it but that would lose the nutrients. I think I'll try offering it as an afternoon treat. My bird loves to have herbal tea in the afternoon. Why not fresh vegetable juice? I'm sure it would freeze well in ice cube trays.

Yes, freezing loses some nutritional value no matter what - so fresh is always ideal but you can still include them and freeze them. Some freeze better than others. We have some pages on freezing and sprouting in the book you can refer to as well.

Yes, I bet that is it as well because they hang around wet garbage cans for sure.

I will get them around my garbage can if a lot of "wet" has gone into it. I guess bugs can live in anything! Thanks for the tip!

A good go to is always brown rice for your grain. When I cannot get parsnips I use turnips.

The recipe is made to feed the largest of macaws once per day for 4 months. We talk about how to size it down for smaller birds and less birds as well, I know it's a long video to get through for all the info.

When I chop many of the vegetables, I put them first in a strainer. The ones which release a lot of water I then put in a gauze-type bag and squeeze until nothing more drips out. But my worry as all that lovely juice (often green but also orange or reddish) drips out is that the liquid is were all the good vitamins, etc. is stored so that if I get them quite dry before freezing there will no longer be the nutrition that unchopped/frozen veggies are expected to have. Should I figure out a way to use the liquid in something else or am I worrying needlessly?

I get fruit flies in my leftover chop once I dump it in the compost. No fruit in the chop at all, but maybe they just still like it.

Ah Patty - I love you so much! I'm sorry you feel uncomfortable on camera, 'cos you make a great double act with JL. I love your warmth and wisdom & honesty. This was very informative as a non-bird person. Thank you Patty and Jamie. My comment is how could you spend that much time and not have a Morgan cameo and Morgan update? Much love to you all for all the work you did to make parrots’ lives healthier and safer.

My blue pied parrotlet does a “wiggle” when she’s eating her pellets. I’ve googled-search and it seems common to parrotlets, some speculated maybe because of the dry texture. It alarmed me at first and then my family but it just seems a thing she does when eating pellets. When she eats anything else, she doesn’t wiggle. My vet strongly recommended a pellet diet because she has Avian Gastric Yeast (latest test result showed no yeast but always a chance it might come back) and little to no fruit.
Great to know fish is encouraged. I gave my birds some halibut from dinner today which they gobbled right up.
As for how I converted my small birds (parrotlet + cockatiel), I used boiled eggs or brown rice a lot, sometimes seed in the beginning.
Thanks Patty for answers! It was lovely to see you and give kisses to Morgan for me! 😘

Thanks so much Patty! This was all so valuable! I have tended to stray from the main recipes, but always staying within what I thought was the base system of a least 2 orange veg (always carrots), at least 1 red veg, 1-2 leafy greens, another green veg like broccoli, and usually a yellow and maybe some extra veggies that looked nice, plus the proportion of grains and legumes. I've also been "bad?" about making several different flavor batches with this base recipe for variety and sometimes even mixing several of my frozen mixes together when I thaw. I break of little chunks and thaw under cold water then strain excess water which gave me freedom to mix and match like that. Now I wonder if I've been giving too much variety in vegetables in a single feeding. I also hang huge chunks of veggies on a skewer during the day, which rotates between leafy greens, green beans, broccoli, winter squash, bell peppers, carrots, and other foods from the feeding system, which I gather is a good thing. I will try to do a better job of sticking to the base recipes. I guess I'm probably lucky that my issues with my bird are him wanting variety. I have no problem getting him to eat any vegetable. He loves them all.

Ok, thanks. I'm the "mushy" I do use a food processor and vacuum sealer so I will try to make the greens/veggies smaller and even though I use a salad spinner to get as much excess water as I can, maybe ill try spinning it again after chopping but before freezing. Also I'll get pics of before and after to possibly explain/show what I'm meaning.
My question about the sprouts was actually a separate one, just wondering if it is ok to freeze sprouts, does that affect the nutritional value at all. Thanks for trying to answer my question though 😀

Patty you ROCK!!!!! I started watching it, ended up rewinding to the beginning, closing my office door (it’s my one day in the office) and started taking notes!! These were great questions and unbelievable answers!! Patty- you were awesome, and are a wealth of information! So unbelievably helpful. It would be cool to do one of these a month... or maybe a quarter? 😉 It’s a lot of great info that you guys probably do automatically, but may not think to talk about or mention normally so it was really great.
About the fruit fly thing, maybe they mean those tiny gnats? I see some around the chop once in a while, it’s really annoying (and I swear, no fruit!!)! Sprout People have a video on YouTube about a natural fruit fly/gnat trap, they said they’re attracted to the sprouting they do in the kitchen (which is A LOT!) They use some kind of sweet wine in a jar or bottle or something, I can’t remember exactly but it’s supposed to work great.

I don’t know about fruit flies being attracted to veggies, but I have a very effective trap I use when I get fruit flies in the house: put some red wine or fruit juice in shot glasses (glass ones, about 1/3 full), then I put plastic wrap over them and poke holes with toothpicks. The flies go in and can’t get out. They work great overnight, so there is no reason the bird would get at them.

First of all, hi everyone, I'm new here. Sending regards from Croatia 😀 Great video! Special thanks to Patty 💖 I laughed like crazy when you could not remember how your seasonal system follows seasons 🤩🤣🤣 Anyway, I made the Fall to Winter recipe a few days ago - stole all the good stuff from my mum's garden 😍 But....mum doesn't have parsnip in her garden, none of the neighbours or supermarkets have parsnip, so I made the Fall to Winter batch without it (I guess it's not a popular veggie where I live). Could you explain what are the benefits of parsnip and what it can be replaced with? And one more question, if I may: which grains go into Winter to Spring recipe? My version of your cookbook (digital download) doesn't list grains for that recipe (just legumes, pasta and veggies). Thank you so much for the answers!

So is the amounts for a single big bird and if so would that translate over to several small birds? I know you kinda answered this but I’m not sure you answered this exactly-if I follow the recipes exactly does it feed one macaw for four months or does it feed your entire flock of birds? Again sorry if this seems repetitive but money is tight I don’t know any bird people close by and there isn’t a rescue close by. I can’t afford to waste half of it. I have two cockatiels and three parakeets. Thank you in for taking the time to do this video but I’m not sure how to not waste food here.
