Sunnyside (foraging)

Foraging is a great source of enrichment but it is especially important for birds with feather destructive behavior. Luckily, Sunny is all about it!

All the toys pictured are in my toy line, but I did incorporate one from Amazon. I will say larger birds CAN take this apart if they are that type (ie: Jinx) but if they are more mellow of a player then they may leave this intact as far as not undoing the metal parts (just be mindful of that). I just want to state that as I don't sign off on the 100% safety of this toy with your bird (and I am working on making a safe, all natural version of my own for that reason but for now, it's a great toy for putting broken toy parts into and getting the most out of your toys.) just keep an eye if they tend to go for the top part and are just focused on undoing it as they could prop it open enough to get something stuck in there.

Some of you may notice in the first photo Sunny has some FU feathers raised and his posture is aggressive and it was towards me for sure! Making sure that I did not react made this posturing go away after a few days (but this is how he was with me when I got back from our trip initially).

Check out my FORAGING toy bundle here.

Why no video in this post? Sunny won't actually PLAY in front of me yet. It is definitely something I may consider trying to formally train or nudging Dave to formally train lol... reminding myself not my project bird... trying not to over step!

Thanks! I do have a birdie skewer. He loves it. I use it daily because mine really prefers chunky or whole veggies. He gets his frozen chop and also a lot of the same stuff fresh on the skewer. Can't get the rice cakes on a skewer. I tried. Fail! lol

Maybe even use paper or cardboard as well to help form walls a bit. I use pretty big chunky pieces that my birds leave behind, or if they find a way to unhang a toy so it just falls then I disassemble the toy myself and use large pieces of it in this. I will say though, Cressi can open the top part on this toy. It drives me crazy because it scares me! You could also try a birdie skewer for whole foods.

Great idea for that foraging cage toy from Amazon. I have one but everything always slips out of the wide bars. I wanted it to put pieces of unsalted brown rice cake. My bird loves to shred them up. Makes the biggest mess in the world. I'll try stuffing the cage with old toy parts first and I bet the rice cages will wedge right in.

We got our first BirdTricks foraging toy bundle delivered today and it's fantastic! Lots of great variety and things we've never tried before. I also like that the exclusive Parrot Joy toy is actually an appropriate size for our little conures vs. the toys from their website were HUGE! Thank you :)

😆 "not my project bird"....go ahead, do it. LOL My Too, Fred, loves working at undoing the lock of the carabiner. So much fun says he. I had to get creative at hiding it so he has to get thru/destroy the toy to reach the carabiner. Sunny is such a stunner, I love to see him doing so well. Thanks for sharing and can't wait till you've trained him to be comfy with you and the video camera. Hee hee hee.... 💖
