BirdTricks Tuesdays Topics
Added 2020-12-19 17:00:00 +0000 UTCWe are taking BirdTricks Tuesday series ideas! Our first series was a Flight Training Series, and second we did our 18 Foundational Failures (which will continue through March 2021) but we are looking for another series idea from you and what topics you want to hear about in BirdTricks Tuesdays! So give us your ideas/submissions in the comments and we will consider them for next year!
Thanks, as always, for helping shape our content!

This is a great idea!!

2020-12-23 16:12:55 +0000 UTCI am in desperate need of information on how to properly raise a baby! There is immense information about training and earning the trust of an adult macaw. However I am finding it extremely difficult to find any information on how to raise my baby “correctly” so they are a well rounded, self confident individual. I guess you could say I am PARANOID of creating behavioral issues! Maybe it’s “first time parent syndrome” but I swear I’m going to create a monster on accident.

2020-12-23 01:17:33 +0000 UTCJust gotta get Blueberry to stay in focus enough to get it lol! She's soooo busy! Body language topics are definitely winning so I will have a chat with Dave about how to go about it best.

2020-12-22 17:55:14 +0000 UTCI have not heard of breeders like that but I know in Oz they do a lot of birdie dating (as they call it) and let their bird go pick a friend from breeders.

2020-12-22 17:53:43 +0000 UTClol thanks! Just put your bird in magic shows all the time, and take them on the road since babies for like... years.

2020-12-22 17:52:07 +0000 UTCWhat about a series on myths that people believe about captive birds? I know you asked people for the worst bird advice they had ever received, what if you answered 10-12 of those in a monthly series? For example: the myth that a bird should be left to “settle in” for a week before you start interacting with it, and what day one should really look like. You could cover day one, diet, handling, clipping, bathing, “punishing” the bird, etc. State the theory and whether it is true or a myth, then dive deeper because there will be people who followed bad advice and now they feel “stuck” and don’t know how to undo what they accidentally did.

2020-12-22 16:47:57 +0000 UTCDesensitization to sounds. Holy moly. Harness training, husbandry, and real time trick training :)

2020-12-22 06:44:52 +0000 UTCTo add to this, using rescue birds would be incredible to see. Many of us struggle with birds with behavioral issues from previous homes, or even just bad habits they have picked up before we got them. Showing how to work with a bird that doesn’t trust you at all would be very helpful. I know you’ve shown it in your work with project birds, but a whole series on it with rescue birds would be great. How do you start with a bird who has been mishandled and doesn’t trust people because of it?

2020-12-21 14:47:11 +0000 UTCI like the idea of an instructional series on body language. I think that is one of my biggest challenges (I see it change but don't always interpret it correctly!) and I see friends struggle with this too. Some tips around training husbandry behaviours would be great. A bird trained in cooperative care would make having a sickie much less stressful! And vet visits!

2020-12-21 08:09:44 +0000 UTCHi Jamieleigh & Dave! I'm thinking of getting another bird and I don't see any in depth advise on getting a second bird and what criteria to use for selecting birds that generally get along with the first bird. Have you ever heard of breeders that would exchange a bird that didn't work with your existing bird(s)? They say " birds of a feather flock together" but sometimes an individual bird of a given species doesn't get along. There are so many variables such as age, gender and lifestyle. Anyway, I know you've had issues sometimes with Jinx, Tusa and Comet but you know how to deal with them. So yeah, "can't they just get along!"

2020-12-21 06:51:44 +0000 UTCI am interested in harness training for adult birds, and how to trim nails for birds like a cockatiel. Where to start and how to proceed with the least amount of stress/ trauma.

2020-12-21 02:54:00 +0000 UTCI love watching the bits on behavior but that's just because I don't have enough experience with bird body language. And I totally get that it's hard to duplicate because it depends on the situation. You have to read the whole situation to understand what the bird is saying. I'm eagerly awaiting the baby bird series as I'm bringing home a baby caique. Maybe a list of what NOT to do? We've already got a household danger course, but tying into your foundational failures, maybe potentially reiterating what NOT to do would be helpful? 😁 Or how to ensure you're feeding the right amount per body weight?

2020-12-21 00:54:12 +0000 UTCI can’t think of anything specific, I’m just like “teach me! Teach me! Teach me!!” Whatever it is I’m happy lol...

2020-12-20 19:15:25 +0000 UTCHow you desensitize a bird to the level that your birds are desensitized. This is so hard lol. You guys already cover everything in some form or fashion so it’s really hard to think of something that’s not covered between here, YouTube, blogs and the courses that you offer.

2020-12-20 17:18:43 +0000 UTCI know you’ve already outlined why it would be difficult to do, but I’m going to vote for a series on bird body language also. It would be challenging for you to film, but would be oh so informative for those of us who struggle to see it.
Carmen Griggs
2020-12-20 16:17:47 +0000 UTCWhere are you located?
Carmen Griggs
2020-12-20 16:15:49 +0000 UTCI see. Anyway I would be interested also in your flocks tiny ones body language, blueberry and the conures for example come closest to my cockatiel I guess. That would also be super interesting! 😊

2020-12-20 15:09:11 +0000 UTCWith in home consults they’re kind enough to allow us to film but for body language I’d have to be filming in slow motion probably the entire time and making filming the priority which I wouldn’t feel right doing unless we did it as a thing where we discounted the consult in exchange for filming exclusively - otherwise they’re really only getting one trainer who is all in on the situation while the other is solely videographer. So I’d have to think about how we would successfully go about it. Might be better done at a rescue with rescue bird body language. But then it makes it so that we can’t as easily produce these episodes without a lot of thought out planning. This is has been my struggle in the past with doing anything on body language. 🤯

2020-12-20 15:03:05 +0000 UTCThis sounds best suited for a one on one consultation based on a what you’re currently feeding and doing 💜 not sure this is much of a full series of videos vs unique to you.

2020-12-20 14:54:35 +0000 UTCHave you seen my series on Touché?

2020-12-20 14:52:05 +0000 UTCWe are working on producing a baby bird course so that’ll probably be where all that information goes 💜
BirdTricks
2020-12-20 14:51:42 +0000 UTCI think that may undermine our hormones course though which really goes over all that - anything deeper than what’s covered in they course is going to require more one on one attention via a consultation.
BirdTricks
2020-12-20 14:51:09 +0000 UTCThat would probably be more up another vet series alley. Dave and I are much more about behavior and training when we do episodes. 💜
BirdTricks
2020-12-20 14:50:22 +0000 UTCYes that's of course tricky. I don't know how much in home consults you do, maybe you could use some material from them? And then comment and talk them through in the bbt? I find them super helpful. 😊
Lucia Hellerhoff
2020-12-20 14:50:15 +0000 UTCThe Tasty Tuesday episodes are really geared towards expanding the diet side of things but honestly if all the info we have isn’t working, it would require a one on one consult at that point because it’s getting so specific.
BirdTricks
2020-12-20 14:48:59 +0000 UTCI like the body language idea although I struggle without having a bird to demo the exact language in context. 💜

2020-12-20 14:47:23 +0000 UTCYeah, that’s the idea, just need another series idea 🙂

2020-12-20 14:40:00 +0000 UTCThis is a cute idea. BTT episodes are geared around being an educational series by me and Dave but this is a great future video idea for me and Capri that I’ll definitely make note of! 💜

2020-12-20 14:35:28 +0000 UTCSome " does and don'ts" with young birds, aged 6 months to 3 years for example and something on senegals, please 🤶🎅

2020-12-20 14:19:05 +0000 UTCI think a hormone series would be great. Most people are triggering and they don't know it.

2020-12-19 21:32:32 +0000 UTCI rescued a very traumatized and abused cockatiel six months ago. He was originally found locked in his cage next to a dumpster by my old coworker. She kept him for about a year before she asked me to take him. I have made some slow progress, but could really use some videos about how to connect with a bird that is not food motivated/really interested in treats like millet, fruit or avicakes but attention isn't a reward for him either.

2020-12-19 21:29:50 +0000 UTCOwning a ringneck, any bonding tricks would be amazing. It is Ground Hogs owning a ringneck. :)

2020-12-19 21:00:23 +0000 UTCStill looking for a great home for my Caique "Widgit". Still successfully responding to training, evert piece of equipment manageable, do wish could keep her but I *have* to leave the country ASAP for reasons beyond my control!

2020-12-19 18:58:01 +0000 UTCThe foundational failures series was great. I knew the basics of the topics but it has been very helpful to get an in depth reinforcement on them. Maybe a bird care series? You could slip the nutrition deeper dives that people want into this. Also, how to pick a quality cage for various sizes of birds. Next do cage accessory selection, what kind of perches, what is safe and not safe. For instance, the word went out about happy huts but there are also bells (especially on larger bird toys), rings or other things that can trap heads or feet, etc. What materials are safe and what do birds enjoy? Then how to arrange everything in a cage so the whole cage is utilized and enjoyed, not just the top third. Maybe another episode for older/special needs bird cage setup too, or for care of special needs birds in general. Household dangers and how to make your home safe. How to clean a cage, not just the big steam clean or pressure wash but also the daily paper change and wipe down of a cage. When I say cage I mean standard cage. I know you guys have the awesome aviaries, but if it is possible it would probably be better to use what most people have so they can translate it to their own better. Other topics... nail trims and bathing, how to get make sure your birds get enough sunlight without an outdoor aviary and how to keep them safe from predators while they are outside both in and out of an aviary, how to keep your house clean with tasmanian devils, er I mean birds living in it...tee hee

2020-12-19 18:51:22 +0000 UTCSomething more in-depth about diet conversion, especially converting seed eaters to your pellets. I know there is already information on BirdTricks and I know you say to never give up but some birds never get converted because their person tries everything and none of it works.

2020-12-19 18:12:18 +0000 UTCTrick training, different tricks maybe in detail, how to train them, different approaches depending on how the bird responds. Body language, looking at different species at a time. This one I would love, since for me it's not possible to watch other parrots than my own at a regular basis. This one could also include typical behaviors for special species and going even further maybe even vocalizations. Maybe something like a species spotlight, maybe also about birds which you don't own. Have good holidays! 🎄🎉

2020-12-19 18:01:34 +0000 UTCI love the foundational failures, maybe something along those lines? I love the informational series!
