I agree that it's per bird. We have a Red-fronted Macaw who rides around securely on my shoulder and even flies to me and lands perfectly there and is well behaved ... But our Harlequin Macaw is not allowed to travel up our arms or be on our shoulders as he gets belligerent, plays king of the hill and doesn't like to step up reliably up there so we just don't allow it - ever. I think he might benefit from my wearing Dave's hat - as his size and pushiness about it really makes me feel like I'm being treaded on. hahaha

YAY!

So, I listened to you guys about the step-up and we practiced every day... from every place, the floor, high places, my shoulder, my head, my husbands shoulder.. ... we did three mini-sessions (2 mins each) a day and now he just does it all the time... he seriously cannot resist it!!! Lol.. xxxx

Tara Dalton

Awe well if you aren't experiencing issues and have a solid step up when needed, it sounds like a great balance for you both.

We both LOVE your videos... he is learning to be a better bird and I am learning to be better bird-parent! My worry is that I think he is learning more quickly that me :-) Lol...

OMG - I think I am the worse parrot-mom ever. Not only is JellyBean on my shoulder, but when I am working he is on my head... usually grinding his beak! The only positive thing is that the poor baby cannot resist a step-up... automatically you put you finger out to him.. he steps up... so I have never had a problem getting him off my shoulder or head.. but I feel bad now! When he wants to come down from my head... like when he needs to poop or is bored.. he hangs down from my fringe and looks at me straight in the eye! Crazy little dude....

Tara Dalton

Aw thanks for saying so!

Are his nails trimmed really short? That could be playing a role, as well as what you are wearing or if you are using a bare shoulder.

Fred, my little Too is not allowed on my shoulder since our first meeting when he bit deeply into my index finger and also pierced the top of my ear (a little v shaped hole) as I tried to get him to come off. Ouch! Thanks to video's that you have done, I know better how to hold him so he can't/doesn't climb my arm anymore. You two make such a big difference in the relationship between Fred and me. Thank you. 👍💕

My pionus is a very good boy on a shoulder if we are seated. He's not so great while we are moving. He really doesn't want to get on my shoulder while we are walking and if I put him there it usually results in an ear nip. I think he feels unsteady up there. I wish he would ride sometimes for convenience when I'm carrying other things, but I'd prefer not to have any additional ear piercings.

The family friendly series is our Foundational series on understanding how your behavior affects your bird’s behavior. It’s included in almost all our course packages and goes over the training quadrant in detail with demos of each part of it as examples with our birds. There’s a 10% discount code you can use via your patreon membership on my website.

A friend of mine, Jessie Leen, whom I’ve done a video or two with is really working with similar methods. I remember asking her about using treats with horses and she said if done wrong many people accidentally train the horse to bite or push/nudge but she had successfully used them with some of her training for sure. She’s heavily into trick training so it was fun to see!

It's discussed fully in both Family Friendly Formula videos which are courses available on Bird Tricks' website. www.birdtricksstore.com 😁

Can you review the subject of “training quadrant” for those of us who missed it, or point us to where we can find it? I’ve heard you mention it often along the way. It seems like an important subject to understand. Thank you for your help and the great work you do for bird owners.

Beth Parish is amazing.

I love your videos so much! I don't even have parrots, I just love hearing you all talk about what you do. Out of curiosity, do you have any horse trainers you really recommend? I've noticed a big difference between permission-based training. What I usually see with horses is almost always positive punishment and negative reinforcement and rarely do things like positive reinforcement or negative punishment come into play. I'm wondering if there's anyone you work with whose approach you endorse. :)
