Tasty Tuesday (new edition) Animal Proteins
Added 2021-02-09 15:59:59 +0000 UTC
Patty and I chat about whether or not it is necessary to include animal proteins in the parrot diet.
Don’t forget, to get the most of plant proteins, we need to consume certain kinds of plants together. That’s why strategic, thoughtful, and balanced meal plans, like BT’s Natural Feeding carefully build recipes, like BT’s Seasonal Feeding System. It’s not just “what’s available when.” It’s also about “how can we meet balanced needs consistently, as best we know about avian nutrition to date, using what’s most naturally available when.” For fishy fun, try bonito (dried tuna) in flakes and powder sprinkles. It’s cheap by the bag and stores dry.

🤣 Oh ma gosh...you two had me laughing so hard. I really needed that. Fred gets a treat of chicken or tuna once in a while. He loves it. I didn't know about pork and beef though. We eat mostly white meat, but I'll stick to just the tuna and chicken treats. Tx for the info and the laughs. 💖😃

Jamie: "Somebody could make an ASMR of the crunching. Just cruuunch cruuunch..."
Me: gooooosebumps goooosebumps!
Great topic, though! Whenever we have fish, I give my birds some (because it says "fish 1x weekly" in your cookbooks), but only cooked in non-salted water. And I remove every single tiniest bone (because - paranoid!). My mom's comment is always: "Yeah, 'cause parrots in the wild go to the rain forest restaurant for dinner and get cooked fish served on a silver platter!" XD
I didn't know that canned fish and other meats are also ok. Always thought that canned fish has too much salt and oils in it. Thanks for the info! You ladies are awesome :)

Yeah, hard pass on dealing with live insects if I don't have too. XD. Interesting to hear other animal protein is okay like chicken, pork and beef. Good to know!

Here’s you one for the cricket. My daughter bought a rough green snake and the person at the pet store told her to feed it crickets. They sold her 20 for $1. Instead of feeding one at a time she put them all in with the snake. The next morning she screamed for me to come in her room because the crickets were the ones doing the crunching. Little buggers had eaten probably a quarter of the snake in less than 12 hours.

Excellent topic!! My pionus really loves chicken bones. These would be from a cooked chicken, usually the wings that didn't get eaten. I remove the skin and a lot of the meat comes off with it. He cracks the bones open and scrapes out the bone marrow. I've read that bone marrow is high in vitamin B12, collagen, and CLA fats. I watch him eat them and it's just like a nut or seed shell, he discards the bone shards. I'd be interested to hear Patty's thoughts on giving chicken bones.
