Tasty Tuesday (new edition) Freezing Foods
Added 2021-03-16 23:00:00 +0000 UTC
There's a whole detailed section on freezing in my Natural Feeding System cookbook set but we wanted to clear up some things. Specifically adding things and making sure you don't do it to the entire batch you are intending to freeze.
Things I add in the day of, fresh (that usually last in that portion size for 3 days):
- Sweet potato (steamed)
- Ground flax seed
- Hard boiled eggs
- Herbs, spices
- Any addition used in food conversion like fruit, corn, nuts, seeds, etc.
- Freshly grown or purchased sprouts
This was not clear to me before, about adding stuff the day of that can be done to the entire freshly thawed portion...I've been trying to remember to individually add stuff to each of their meals for the day from the thawed batch. This would keep me from forgetting most days to add flax seed. LOL

I get small vacuum sealer bags and freeze about 40g per bag for my GCC, which is about 2.5 days of meals for her. I'll mix the thawed food with sprouts, and maybe a little oatmeal or ground chia seed if it's watery.

Fresh is always better! So if you can even sprout your own that is most ideal!

Yes there is, fresher is always better so if you can do that, definitely do that! We want to ensure people are offering sprouts at all which is why they are included in the recipes but if you can add fresh or even sprout your own, that's most ideal.

I love you guys. It's so much fun watching you. I just get filled with positive emotions, even though in reality it takes like forever for me to vacuum seal my little bags for my one small bird (soon to be two!). I absolutely love the ice cube tip! Gonna do that with my next batch. I just wish he would eat it... He just wants carrots. You can see what he ate by the color of what comes out the other end. He'll become orange soon, I am absolutely sure!

Great video! I use the same method as Pablo for thawing, breaking or cutting off just what I need for a day.
The one time I froze sprouts it ruined them. They disentigrated. I add fresh.

You ladies are awesome as always ^_^
When I make a batch, I put it in small zip bags (approx. 120g each) and freeze it in a thin layer so it breaks easily. My two birds eat about 40g a day, so I break their 40g portion off in the evening and it thaws overnight, just in time for breakfast the next day. When I want to add something into their breakfast (eggs, sweet potato, flax seed - always freshly ground,...) I just break off and thaw a smaller piece.
I would also like to know the answer to Britteny Johnson's sprouts question. Thanks!

These are some great ideas, thank you! I whipped up my first batch of seasonal feeding today and am so happy with the results. I saw in the recipe that you add sprouts to the batch before freezing, is there a significant difference in nutritional value or results when adding fresh sprouts daily instead? Or is this just preference?

Good advice, thx. I have 2 grays and an Amazon. When I make a batch, I pat it down into a cookie sheet about 1/2 inch thick and score it to break in about 4 pieces. I freeze it as quickly as possible and then, after I break it up, when it is frozen, I vacuum seal it. If I vacuum seal it before I freeze it it seems to pull all the liquid out. Just a month ago, I figured out to do the tip you suggested. I get out a whole quarter or half a cookie sheet From the deep freeze, put it in a ziploc bag in the house refrigerator, and then I just cut off as much as I need per day per bird. That has been working really good for me because sometimes my birds eat more or less and I need to do a little adjusting. .

I LOVE when Patty visits. On top of her sensible and defensible approach to avian needs, sharing Morgan’s struggles (even though she is an advanced bird carer), made us feel brave to really, really try BT methods. It changed our Morgan’s life for the better, even at 27 years old. We will always think of Patty with tremendous gratitude, for helping fuel our faith. 🐦💞
