Q&A March 2021

What you said about Caiques and dogs made me laugh, remembering Widget rushing up to Doogal who thought they were making friends and bit a bleeding hole in his toe! We were sharing such a small space, being able to send her to you is SUCH a blessing! Thank you thank you thank you! Tell Widget "cheep!" from me!

Susan Hopkins

Thank you for your response! We are just keeping them separated! Kids are loving them so we are doing good! Almost completely in seasonal feeding not too hot in the pellets so I’m fine chopping them and putting in to seasonal at night and slowly leaving bigger pieces as the days go by

Thank you for the response. I will work with Hal and feet, although his fear is truly in the one place. Otherwise he climbs onto my feet and sits on them. No fear. He did learn to not to run towards people walking past him after the incident, which was actually a good thing that came from it. Just like he learned not to sneak up on people after he nearly got shut in the refrigerator. He now announces himself with his pionus quacky noise as he's entering a space. Oddly still no fear of the refrigerator. He is always trying to peek in there. I probably give him more freedom than I should. I must have hurt his feelings when we had our little foot brushing incident. The bad spot has become a weird place for him altogether. It's a landing at the top of 3 short steps to the bedroom area of our split-level house. The other day he was on the top stair marching back and forth with his FU feathers up. Pionus are infamous for that strut, but it's usually on top of their cage. I asked him if he was charging a toll to pass and then distracted him away from his patrol. A lot of the time he nips my hand even when I carry him past the bad spot. I've started setting him down on my mother's stair lift and making him wait there until I get down the stairs and pick him back up. So maybe the problem is really more that spot than feet. I will work on feet first before progressing to the spot, though. He has already gotten my big toe pretty good a couple of times there. Bringing up Bandit made me teary with you. My sweet old cockatiel that passed before we got Hal was always so comforting when I was upset. Young Hal may be turning out good that way too. The other day when I was upset he sat quietly with me and pressed his beak to my nose, which is something because he doesn't usually sit still for long.

For the last question about birds noticing when your not feeling well. All my birds are really tuned into me and somehow they notice when I'm having a bad pain day, they actually seem to understand I can't do all the things I usually do and they are great about it and can self entertain well. As for my moods, my male ekkie is incredibly sensitive to all of it and even knows to ask me "are you ok". Thats when I realize the birds are picking up my emotions, from my ekkie. He is incredibly sensitive to just about everything. Its truly incredible how tuned in they all are, but Mylo, my ekkie blows my mind.

Thank you for the response and as soon as you brought up Bandit I got teary myself. I have one bird who will take me as is so I get it but feel like the others just don't get it. I would be curious how others respond to them when they are not feeling well or emotionally off.

I think it doesn’t matter if it is one of y’all solo or the whole family we love watching and learning from you guys. Hope your day slowed down for you after. 😊
