Widget the Caique | Getting her to settle to sleep

This video talks about our struggles in getting Widget to go to sleep at night.

Widget the Caique | Getting her to settle to sleep

Comments

It took us a while to figure out what’s comfortable for my GCC. We have a travel carrier that’s all clear plastic. She sleeps in that in the guest bedroom. When we got our IRN he just joined in on her routine and sleeps in a small night cage next to her for 12 hours in the guest bedroom. It works out great. What I have trouble with is understanding how we don’t accidentally reinforce the bad vocalizations. My IRN is constantly squawking and making very loud vocalizations. We have a very open floor plan too and there daytime cages are in the main family room where we watch TV eat dinner and spend most of our awake time. The IRN can go on and on and on squawking. Are we reinforcing it by staying in the room and ignoring him? Should we be removing him to another room or moving ourselves into another room? I’m having trouble trying to figure out a way around it and still keep them with the family.. Great video as usual.

We have our powder room (small bathroom on the main floor) as the room for Cheeky's sleeper/ travel cage. She hates that thing with a PASSION (ripped a bar off once at the bird sitter's) but I do think sleep helps her. Unfortunately, that room is right beside the garage where I'm constantly going in and out getting ice packs for my head pain (Traumatic Brain Injury) every 2-4 hours until I fall asleep at night. So then I accidentally interrupt her sleep again... It's so hard for average family homes with open concept floor plans to have options to fit the needs of these demanding pets. I'm so glad you guys have the studio! I think Ronnie's should definitely find a way to drill home just how loud Widget can be before people take her home.

When you're talking about the inconvenience to your family: that's exactly how I feel about Cheeky. My family had NO clue how incredibly LOUD Cheeky would be. Even with the 2 large cages, 1 in the basement and one in the family room, the noise travels. I've been told by my family Cheeky is a bit of a burden, and I feel awful that my pet causes so much chaos and upset. Thankfully, we are moving into a house where we are building Cheeky her own room in the basement that we will sound proof. We are also getting thick, engineered hardwood floors that look so thick I'm hoping it quells the noise.

I've been thinking and thinking how to do this for my three parrots. I have a small house and it seems like a lot of people so I'm pretty baffled as to how to make this happen but I'm going to really try at least to make a dark space for them. That it's going to be always quiet, I don't think that's possible. I'm totally convinced that you're right on about how lack of sleep affects their behavior. Thank you for sharing this video. I'm looking forward to talking with Dave about this further soon.

We provide the 12 hours to avoid triggering hormonal responses so that may be the case for the wild birds, but they're also doing a lot of natural behaviors we are trying to curb in captivity.

The screaming makes me think of my parents umbrella (I know, your favorite haha)... He screams constantly it feels like. When they leave the room he screams and screams. Even when they are in the room and either have their backs turned to him or just not paying attention to him, he screams. When they go outside of the house... Guess what, he screams 🤣 This had some great info I can share with them!

Sleep is definitely a key element I’ve got to sort with my caique. Side note: am wondering if it might be different for different species. eg Those like caiques from near the equator need 50:50 sleep:wake, those from further away eg Australia maybe need less sleep?

Oh, yeah to the sleep! Has made a huge difference to my Congo Grey & Blue and Gold. They no longer freak out over every little thing. Snow can slide off the roof right outside the windows surrounding their play stands; no reaction, no screaming. Packs of 4 wheelers went up the dirt road we live on last weekend (it was 70 degrees in NH) with them outside in the deck.... the only reaction was the Macaw pinning her eyes and giving an excited, interested head fluff! No screaming in alarm!!!!! Sleep sleep sleep! Thank you BirdTricks!

My caique Monty seems to get around 11-11.5 hours of sleep the days I work but that’s mostly in part due to my work schedule. Otherwise, I think we’re pretty good so far. I’m glad y’all could get Widget to settle after all!

Jessica Almquist

It's fixed for me! Sweet Widget, such good info on how important adequate sleep is. My little GCC rarely sleeps the full 12, but usually gets 11 -11.5 hours before she starts peeping (though the idea is for 12). She's in a dark room by herself, light blocking curtains.

Heather Wolf

Hey everyone! Jamie doesn't have great cell service at the moment but I think I was able to fix it for her. Please email me at info@birdtricks.com if it is still showing privacy setting errors. Thanks!!

Here too. I tried on two different computers to see if it mattered. It won't play on either of them.
