Cookbook edits!!
Added 2021-06-29 14:00:05 +0000 UTC
Alright guys, it's time to update my cookbook set! (And don't worry, digital downloaders, the update will be automatically available to you and nothing MAJOR is changing for those of you that got printed copies.)
I just always want to be updating our information and keeping the most relevant info out there. I also find a lot of the stuff I am saying on consultations can be added to the books so they are more "whole" for people struggling getting their birds to eat healthy.
If you don't already have my cookbook set, you should because it's included in part of your tier as a digital download haha. If you want a printed copy, it's here.
Please leave a comment or feel free to DM me with any modifications you feel necessary so I can make sure I'm thinking about everything when I go to make these edits. Thanks as always for your input!
My Galah has absolutely loved your seasonal feeding! She was super aggressive with my husband and older son prior to getting her on your system. In Australia we cant access your pellets but there is one called TOPS which is the same ingredients. She is less aggressive (still wants to fly and attack the them at times ) but can be in the family environment without wanting blood. Working on that part still lol. Diet at least is on point

I was preparing the Summer recipe yesterday and, as always, wondered if the veggies I have are the right size or are beets too small, is butternut squash too big,... am I getting the right balance of green vs. red vegies vs. grains and legumes or would Jamie and Patty kill me if they saw what I'm doing? 😅
I'm a math person and I like knowing the exact measurements for things. Through trial and error and some googling I learned how much grains and legumes I need in raw form to get the required amount of their cooked form.
But, most of the veggies don't have exact weight listed. 3 beets can be anywhere from 30 grams to 3 kg... It would be really helpful if you would add some sort of measurable weight units for all veggies. 😊

Awesome 😎 thank you for the prompt response… I left them whole and my 5 month old Camelot Macaw likes to nibble them while holding it in his talon

Leave them whole if they will be an enticement to your bird's first introduction to the food. If your bird has already grown accustomed to our seasonal recipes then toss it into the food processor or leave it out entirely. Pasta is more of an enticement for the birds to eat the sfs than anything. :)

May I have some clarification regarding the penne noodles in the summer SFS? Are they supposed to be chopped or left whole?

I’d love your neat little changes to the birdie bread recipes like the ones you did with Capri on Tasty Tuesdays. I have ADHD and appreciate when things are printed in front of me. 😅 Those ideas were so cute and I think different than the ones in the book…?

If you dedicate a section in the SFS book for names of ingredients (exmp: garbanzo beans also known as a type of cheakpea/squash is a type of pumpkin/Swiss chard is a green leafy that is cut from a beet plant/navy beans are white beans, and on and on)
acting as a key for translation, non english speakers/people from around the world can translate the ingredients more easily. my hebrew speaking mother often makes the SFS for me, and it takes her a long time to translate it herself. Usually it’s my duty to help her with that part, and so she doesn’t use the cookbooks for anything other than the SFS. - having a book one can read easily with no major hesitation is a totally different experience than having to sit down and translate entire recipes. Also having pictures of the ingredients could be dope as some people work with visuals better when translating.

The cookbook edit sounds like a great idea. Including information on converting birds would be good. I see a lot of followers comment that some of the ingredients are not available where they live. You give an outline of a base SFS and substitution suggestions on pages 41-42. It seems that advice gets missed a lot or maybe some people are not comfortable adapting a recipe on their own. It might be helpful to add substitution suggestions in the recipes themselves. You already have this for some ingredients. Adding more suggestions for substitutions would probably help. For the pea greens, the greens from the turnips that are already going into the recipe would be a great and frugal substitute.

I 2nd the idea of having your homemade seed recipe for little birds. I spent 1 hour at the pet store trying decide what the lesser of the two evils of the types of seed mixes offered. I think that would be helpful too. Having it right there in your cookbooks would be a lot easier I believe. I also agree with adding the diet conversion, I am going to be going this with my new little guy coming here in the next week or so and I already have the freeze dried system and what he is eating now is horrible so I'm sure doing this conversion is going to be fun and having that info right in front of me would be awesome.

Love the idea of adding diet conversion information. That is THE #1 question I get from people who see my birds eating your food. Maybe even adding your homeade seed recipe for the little birds? That would be super helpful to people as well I am sure.

In your Healthy Holiday, page 34 says page 22.
