Tasty Tuesday | Q&A Part 2

Comments

Thank you Jamie. This comment along with the info you provided during the Live Q&A Zoom earlier today is very helpful!

If they are currently underweight then I would probably offer 6 small meals a day to them. You could also try some of the diet tips in my budgie course like the sweet potato balls with the seed mix and possible tie some eggs in to an afternoon snack with the SFS. I give two large meals to Blueberry every day and she does great on that but if I was personally told my birds were underweight I would be offering them food opportunities more often to get them on par.

Should I be implementing the strict breakfast and dinner routine for the little guys as well? I have 3 cockatiels and worry that they won't eat enough to maintain their weight if I only give them 2 meals a day. As it is the vet and groomer both have said they all feel underweight. I offer them chop (SFS) for breakfast and dinner but provide them with BT pellets with a small amount of Blueberry's seed mix throughout the day. I would love to know what the correct approach should be for the "Littles."

W. Va is about 3 hours from us but thank you very much. We are 1 mile from the Ohio border.

oh good to know - thanks, I'll definitely try!

Hey Connie! Just wanted to jump in about a vet near you. They are 1-1.5 hrs from Pittsburgh, but Cheat Lake Animal Hospital in Morgantown, WV has been a lifesaver. They have several registered Avian vets and take emergency walk ins. Their prices (even for emergencies) are incredibly reasonable. I drive several hours - one way - to see them and it's most definitely worth it.

Mung Beans are really easy and my favorite to sprout! I too have struck out with other beans but mung beans never fail me.

Kim Russell

I'm sorry we don't know of one in that area. You might try looking up "exotic" vet as vets who see exotics usually have an avian vet in that same practice.

BirdTricks

Omg I've had so many bean sprouting fails 😅... I've stuck to lentils now since they're the only thing I can consistently NOT screw up hahaha

Oh my gosh, this was so helpful. I never thought about how much their eating of Pellets versus fresh veggies/natural feeding system. My vet (avian vet) told me that I should feed my birds 80% of the pellet and she was not happy about me switching to Birdtricks pellets. She told me that I need to stay with one of the old faithful like zupreme natural. On another video I remember you saying that the older vets have a tendency of not considering the new and improved science of the birds diet so I’ve completely ignored the vet over this but I’m not sure how to make it even. Or one complement the other. I’m always worried they’re not getting enough so if they eat all their pellets in the bowl is empty it worries me that I’m not feeding them enough so I’ll give them more pellets. Just when I think I have an area down, I find out and I have no idea what I am doing and I need you to come and help me. I just want to pack my birds up and fly to you and have you teach me everything I need to know for them to be happy healthy well-behaved birds. I really feel dumb sometimes. I’m trying so hard to give them a good healthy life and not be one of these losers that just drop the birds off at the sanctuary. But I don’t wanna be a person that’s doing more harm than good also. So I guess I need help in this area to. Yes that also had another strike against her. She will not let me come in when she is examining the birds. I get no feedback after she does the exam only before she does the exam. The vet techs told me that she’s more strict about it because of Covid but even when there’s not Covid she doesn’t let the humans come back. I can’t find another avian vet closer than two hours away. Do you know have a good vet near the north hills of Pittsburgh? Help

I never thought about about sabotage.. I think my cocketiels like the pellets more but there are only 2 days out of the week I can't give the fresh in the morning. I think I am so worried about them being hungry I am also sabotaging myself. Every other animal in my house has free access to food all day.
