Tasty Tuesday - 10 Ingredients That Don't Belong!

Today Patty and I decided to create a list of 10 ingredients that we believe DO NOT belong in your bird's chop!

Tasty Tuesday - 10 Ingredients That Don't Belong!

Comments

Really late to the party, but I recently saw palm oil on what I considered to be a relatively good site for buying parrot supplies here in the UK. Couldn’t believe my eyes. Isn’t palm oil also toxic to dogs? I think I’ve heard that one before.

What about a list you could quickly grab a pinch to make it taste different in the morning

This is why I love your pre-made SFS. I don’t add anything other than water and boom I’m done! Super convenient since I don’t have a kitchen.

Justus Walls

Love you two. Another great TT. xC

I asked Patty about this and here was her response: The two seeds have different values and benefits. Our birds are on flaxseeds because of the omega-3’s, which as we have discussed, is important when you are not training because they’re not getting the nuts. Chia seeds offer more protein and are high in calcium and very beneficial for birds in that regard. Both are similar in calories, Chia seeds are probably a little lower than flax seeds. As long as her bird is eating the SFS (and not foraging for the Chia seeds) I think it’s fine that she uses them BUT they need to be ground in order to be beneficial as the seeds will just be passed whole and not be utilized by the body.

No, we feed green beans raw and we’re referring to navy and such in this video

It’s currently for sale to the Rocko and Morgan tiers and we hope to go public in June

When will there be more freeze-dried SFS for sale?

Julia Atkinson

I think if you the same proportions chopped a bit thicker I bet it’ll be fine, I remember Patty’s bird Morgan also prefers holding her SFS in her feetsies.

My vets had said it I have said, welp, mmmm okay. I think he’ll do fine with no constant fruit supply. This veggies are very nutritious. I have dropped a copy of the SFS once in a thank you note, hopefully some stuff members will have the intrest of reading it and maybe searching more about the issues with that approach and the low standard that is held on so strongly in the avian world (I don’t blame them for not having anybody to expect of higher standard out of them, we don’t have many Local avian vets and ,almost all had done their degree before 2013, most also treat other animals and not just specialize in birds, and those who do work mainly with birds have some very old ideologies that I bet were pretty innovative at one point but things has evolved much since than. I chose this clinic because the staff is very nice and they know how to do a physical and handle parrots, they have the technology to do x rays and ultrasound and some blood testings, they don’t have the technological tools to do dietary blood tests which makes sense for why they can’t recognize the bad symptoms daily fruit has on birds… they mostly treat sickness.)

Wait are green beans beans? Like, do you have to boil them first? Or do you just talk about beans like navy and red beans?

I have put coconut oil in the SFS few times serving a purpose of a beak moisturizer years ago but I have to admit that since Chakko started bathing, all the moisturizing properties that the ingredients of the SFS contained has been enough and his beak has never got as dry as it was before being on the SFS. Turns out that beta-carotene rich food and sprouts has a quality of moisturizing by themselves.

My bird was not eating his SFS as well as I would like. I tried adding ground flax, but that made it even less appealing to him. Same with sweet potato. So I've been adding a small pinch of chia seeds to his serving. He now runs to his bowl to eat. From what I've read chias have slightly less fat than flax, and it's more Omega 3 fat. Chias also have more than twice the calcium. I don't grind them because they are already so small and I think my bird enjoys them mostly for the crunch they add. I've heard Jamie says she add ground flax all or most of the time. I hope the chia is as acceptable as the flax.

I love how much fun you guys have making these videos! Never stop including bloopers!! I love it!

I have a question my Amazon, he loves the SFS but recently stopped eating it because he decided he likes to hold the veggies with his feet 🤣 so i have rechopped every thing bigger 😳, except for the beans, im skeptical about how much to give him regarding the beans lol 🤔

There are some fairly well-known aviculturists who really advocate for putting fruit and nuts into the daily diet of captive parrots. Their reasoning seems to only be based on the fact that "parrots in the wild eat fruit and nuts" as their daily diet, but pay no mind that (1) we are not able to replicate wild fruit and nuts from the Amazon (for example), and (2) captive parrots (even the most active ones) spend considerably less time actively flying and foraging for food and fending off predators and so forth, and the sugars in fruits we give our companions just sit in their bodies, creating negative behaviors and fat. (I am sure everyone on here knows that, but it is worth sharing again, I think!) Also, Jamie, your yellow mascara makes it look like you have feathers! ;)
