Tasty Tuesday - My Cockatiel Seed and Grain Mix Recipe
Added 2022-06-28 23:00:00 +0000 UTCI get asked A LOT about my Blueberry Seed Mix recipe being able to be used for cockatiels. So in today's video, although a Tasty Tuesday video, this is also a pre-release video going on YouTube because I see SO MANY COCKATIEL OWNERS using crap quality seed mixes.
You're also getting a SNEAK PEEK at the project bird I took on after Blizzard!
For project bird content, you need to be a Bondi tier or above.

2024-06-10 18:25:40 +0000 UTCJust got off the phone with the vet. It’s definitely chronic lymphocytic leukemia and it’s progressed quite a bit in 4 weeks. His white blood count went from 146,000 at his first visit to 286,000 this visit. It’s apparently very rare in parrots and chemo would just traumatize and torture him needlessly. Frequent, traumatic vet visits with little hope of prolonging his life significantly. So we’ll do palliative care - keep him loved and happy until his quality of life declines. We had a good discussion about what to expect and some suggestions for vets close to me that work with my vet at the OSU Veterinary College - 2 hours away from us. One of her suggestions is 5 miles from me and I have used her before. She’s a good vet, just not an avian certified vet. But in an emergency or when it’s time to end his suffering, she will be a good, close choice. This sucks, but what can I do - just gotta take care of him and love him as long as I can. 💔💔💔

My 2 cockatiels that I’ve had for 6 weeks, who have been on your Blueberries Seed and Grain mix because I needed something quick as they came to me on a garbage seed mix. I offered the new mix to them today and they went nuts over it!! They’ve been pretty enthusiastic about the Blueberry’s, but I sprinkled the cockatiel mix in their foraging tray and they haven’t come up for air in the last 30 minutes 💜💜💜 They are also on the freeze dried SFS and the BT pellets. Next up is making and freezing the SFS for them, but the freeze dried is keeping us eating healthy until I get there. Thanks so much for all you do!! I’ve learned so much from you all. Going to the vet for a recheck Friday after being on a better diet for a month - both had some big concerns come up on their blood work last visit. Hoping a healthy diet has helped get them to a better place and the bloodwork comes back better. I know it can’t cure cancer, but maybe, just maybe, I can make a difference for them. Crossing my fingers and praying for improvement 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

2022-07-03 20:46:09 +0000 UTCIf he is an old guy that struggles keeping a good weight you can up it more than 10%. 10% is the "goal" for average, healthy birds. But if he NEEDS it to sustain then that is different. You can mix it with the pellets to get him interested (I would powder my pellets as well as having some original sized pieces). I would also mix the seed mix with the SFS if he doesn't eat that well either. It will all just help him gain and sustain and you can slowly back off as he allows.

2022-07-03 01:00:50 +0000 UTCJamie, thank you for your response. 1 of my cockatiels is an old man who is very low weight. I struggle to keep his weight up. He weighs 69 grams on a good day. He came to us after spending at least 13 years on a 99 cent store seed diet! I'm so thankful I was able to convert him to your SFS and some pellet (he's not a fan of pellets). Right now I've been feeding him 1 tsp of SFS, pellets (which he only pecks at a tiny bit) and 1 tsp of Blueberry seed mix. I now plan on making your cockatiel mix. Should I stick with the 1 tsp of seed or increase/decrease? You said seed shouldn't make over 10% of a birds diet, so I'm trying to figure out what 10% of my tiel's diet would look like. 🤔 He BEGS for seeds daily!!

2022-06-30 22:22:14 +0000 UTCHonestly this mix is more meant for “my bird came on a crappy store bought seed mix and won’t eat anything but seed” so I recommend getting them onto this. If your bird has the perfect diet already and no weight issues, I wouldn’t introduce this. Seed shouldn’t make up over 10% of a bird’s diet ever but Clyde came on seed… a really crappy one.

2022-06-30 22:21:50 +0000 UTCAs for the GCC, unless you’re having weight issues and need help putting on weight because of illness or old age, you don’t need to introduce this mix into the diet at all. You could use it as treat rewards or a special occasion but don’t do anything to sabotage the great diet you’ve established.
