My 2023 Goals + Resolutions

Comments

I love the way you communicated the way that YouTube comments impact you. You could start a side hustle (with all your free time 🤣). A councilling service to help people be better balanced humans for their parrots! I can absolutely relate to your feelings of trepidation in deciding to be more involved in reading YouTube etc. comments. I've just started toying around with making video content for my work. Everyone at work loved my first two videos. Friends and family (outside the industry) that I could trust to give me honest opinions had mixed responses and I was (briefly) crushed 😂 but I needed it to help me do better. Some things I learned during my leadership training that I think could help are: 1. See feedback as data. Fact check negative feedback. While what is true for one may be true to many beware of outliers. Negative experiences stand out in our minds due to the impact of cortisol on our brains and bodies. It makes them more impactful, it doesn't make them more true. I might be a great idea to sit with a few people and pick apart the negative comments, while staying out of judgement, to decide whether this data is valid. 2. You don't need to change your business model or content if 90% of people like it (with or without constructive feedback) and 10% don't. That 10% of people might have fixed mindsets (fixed vs growth) and believe with every fibre of their being in dominance and submission, birds eat seeds, clipping wings is the only safe thing to do etc. You can't change them, they aren't your tribe. Besides, dedicating 90% of your energy on the 10% that aren't happy doesn't make sense. I'm loving Brene Brown's Dare to Lead podcast. It helps keep my mind open to different perspectives and helps me be rational when someone else's idiosyncrasies start to frustrate me.

I love how you set new years goals & stick to them. I gave up doing that years ago. Lol. Lavender is a great oil. You can wear a vial around your neck & take a sniff when needed too. This way you aren't overwhelming everyone around you with Lavender. If you have any neck issues or pain whatsoever don't do headstands. You can do it using 2 chairs or yoga blocks might work & get the same result. They take the pressure off your neck.

I will definitely be making a video with Dave to explain the WHY behind my fear going in on this and how our experiences differed from one another. We just haven't had a lot of free time to sit down and chat about this topic yet for patrons. But really looking forward to sharing it to see what you all think!

BirdTricks

Hey Guy! Thanks for thinking of that, I actually do use moderators currently from my team. When the video first goes live I usually watch comments and reply myself but after that they take over for me usually.

And P.S this is funny but, as a very easily stressed person, I spray Lavender Essential Oil ALL OVER my skin because A. It really helps calming the muscles and the psyche B. It really helps with preventing access sweating because Lavender is super drying lols (good points to massage are the wrist, behind the ears and on the temples, on the heart area and down the back, it calms the muscles and it helps with feeling at ease, which makes me less nervous and more receptive to my environment)

The bird trainer conference sounds really interesting, I hope next time you go you feel more confident in yourself, I can just imagine how attending projects like that can support you through valuable feedback and strengthening you as a person/teacher/trainer/student, I relate so deeply to feeling vulnerable in learning setting, I know I am fairly young to say that but some of my school years were very hard (hard is not even enough to describe those times) and because of that sometime it takes me lots of time and effort in order to trust that the space and the community/teacher will be a safe space for learning, but when I find that zone of confidence and trust it is really rewarding - I love learning and you know what I don’t have to stay in a learning environment that is unsafe for me or effecting me negatively, I have the choice now. I hope you find a safe learning space to support your growth and skills and help you shape your style of learning and evolving in your skill in a way that works for you. Thank you for sharing about this, this is really inspiring!

Jamie have you heard about this new YouTube feature for the comment section, that regards community guidelines (I don’t know much about this but I’ve encountered channels where when you are clicking on the comment section YouTube tells you that channel’s community guidelines and rules for the comment section)? I also heard some people hire moderators for the comment section

Guy Goldstein K

I encourage you to do that!

Great video. Thanks for sharing, Jamie. I want to go forward with my budgies, do a lot of training on handling for medical procedures, like them being fine with being grabbed, drinking out of a syringe and so on. I am thinking about starting a youtube series on bird training in german. I did not find any free german sources on parrot training, that come even close to your content and german parrot communities and forum are so full of bad advise , that I often times can not stand it. But I have never started such a project before and I am afraid of messing up. so dunno. Still working that idea in my head.

MisterTene

I don’t know why I never thought to make a resolution regarding my bird. Thanks for sharing your resolutions. I have been working on teaching my budgie not to rush the door when I’m bringing her food. I also want to get more consistent with tracking her weight.

Thank you so much for your 2023 video. I liked hearing your self-reflections - putting content out there and struggling with some of the negative feedback even when so many value what you do; working on not getting stuck in the downward spiral, working on being a better person in so many areas; no sugar, etc. So good. And since many of your goals resonate with my own, it helps me to hear them articulated so well. Thank you 😊 And though this may not have been your intention with having Olivia in your video, I really enjoyed her quiet, sweet presence on your shoulder. At this time last year I rescued a very fearful pineapple green-cheeked conure, Aruba, and we made a lot of headway together even with a full summer of many visitors, a home wedding for my oldest son and so much more. She now eats well, steps up, flies to me, spins and we're working on the wave. However, watching Olivia made me realize that I've not been mindful of encouraging Calm in my bird. When she's with me she's constantly working to earn a treat by doing "the things" and then gets frustrated (bitey) when I don't respond to her cues. 😉 So thank you both for helping me see what our next work together will be. 😊

Headway looks good so far, I signed up while still watching the video. The first one to come up for me was about money management, it seemed a bit conflicted so accessing the whole book might be a good idea for me at some point. I’m going through as many of the videos on here as I can, as it might be that I have to stop contributing on Patreon for a little while to focus on funding a consult or two. Diet conversion comes up for so many of the birds you take on though, so being able to see more of the project Birds, and in more detail, has been really useful. Clyde, the Cockatiel, in particular reminds me of my Cockatiel, who is definitely also millet obsessed. Although I’m sorry that you were going through stuff at that point, it’s also really valuable that you were open about the effect This was having on your relationship with Clyde. Mental Health issues, whether they be temporary or a long-term thing, can have a massive impact on our relationships, even our relationships with our animals. I think sometimes that’s the biggest thing holding me back, because as soon as I establish a routine, something happens like my sleeping patterns fall out of whack, and I’m back to square one. Lucky for me, I’ve managed to get my hands on some freeze dried, currently in shipping. So at least that will make preparing the morning chop so much easier. I haven’t noticed it so much with Birds, but even my dog seems to be in better spirits when the house is cleaner. The shift in my energy probably has something to do with it, but i’ve noticed subtle things about her behaviour that change when the environment changes. For example, she has a big comfy bed, inside a massive crate, and the other day, I threw all her toys in there. I had to put them on top of the crate before, but wanted the top surface to clear for a change. I didn’t put them on her actual bed, just in the space in front of her bed, but still inside the crate if that makes sense. In some ways, it’s been a good thing because it’s promoted more play behaviour, but at the same time, she doesn’t seem to want to go in there as much, so perhaps it feels cluttered. And then there’s this morning, when she decided, she disliked the fact that a box was in the way of her downstairs bed, which is not in a cage. I only know this, because she was choosing to be upstairs, further away from me, in her cluttered bed. I’m guessing it was the box, but there was other clutter in her way as well. The affected space is becoming clearer by the minute though. Talking of which, I suppose I better get back to it.

Love these goals, Stephanie! And if you really wanna tackle the diet stuff, I highly recommend a consult with our consultant Kim. She is an amazing support system in and of herself and can keep you on track for making progress. One of my books recently said having a clean home helps you feel more comfortable and able to relax in it and declutters your mind. I find that all to be so true!

BirdTricks

What a cool realization!

BirdTricks

Aw Beckie, that gave me a good laugh, thanks!

BirdTricks

Thanks, Madi, same to you!

My New Year’s resolutions are to finally crack diet conversion, to get myself in a better routine for cleaning, not only my bird cages, but in general, and to do one thing each day, more if I can, but at least one to make myself feel a bit better. Sometimes that can be as simple as brushing my hair. Funnily enough, I didn’t really decide what my resolutions were until yesterday.

Now I have chickens, who go way way down At the dumb curves have been in Sandpoint for a year now and maybe in the future we can set an aviary and do some fostering.

Hi Jamie, after listening to your talk tonight I wanted to say that I admire you and your families work with these precious dear birds. When I first became interested in parrots it was through Alex the grey in Irene Pepperburg’s work. I was fascinated by the intelligence of these birds and how training them could give clues in how to train children dogs etc. I recently retired as a Pediatrician after 30 yrs and was considering going to trading school for dogs as there is so much overlap even in modeling child’s behavior in a more positive way. I found your bird tricks by accident on Patreon and became a supporter. I use an online site for this-Grisha Stewart who I highly recommend for not only good learning potential but they teach those who wish to train to work on themselves as important people too. A little back ground in my experience with parrots. I started with a Moluccan cockatoo who really smart intelligent and a good bird with fewbadhabits. Soon I had an African GreySmokey who changed her name to Smokey Sue, the love my life. Before I knew it I had eight parrots when people find out you have parrots they get droed on your step. My favorite birds are Mcaws especially the mini macaws

I am currently working on my mental health and how that affects me as a parent, wife and trainer. The one thing that I have leaned is that working with my birds helps me get out of my emotions and back to thinking logically.

FayK

One of the things I’m working on are small things to improve my physical health. That’s all I want to say for now.

Beckie Child

I saw a card today, Jamie that made me think of you. It said, “Thou shalt not worry about the opinions of irrelevant thunderc*nts.” It made me think about the challenges you have when reading unhelpful social media comments. You have so much to offer the world. Take what’s helpful in the comments, and leave the rest. Go gently with you. Happy New Year!

Beckie Child

Loved this video Jamie!! Happy 2023 🤍
