Taking ALL my birds to the vet! (so many answers!)

We got so many answers going to the vet at WSU. Happy to share them all, finally.

Taking ALL my birds to the vet! (so many answers!)

He much prefers running and enjoys his runs too over flying for sure so don’t feel bad! We’ve always known it was something. Just didn’t know what. He’s not in any pain. 💛🧡💛

I feel a little bad now for enjoying Comet's run so much - I had no clue it could be because of a physical condition. He is so lucky to have such diligent caregivers who notice the little things!

I love the bird bus graphic — so fun! I hope I can get my garden going again this summer — reminds me how much I miss it, though my carrots never grow like yours!

If I didn't ask for the blood tests, my vet would just do the physical exams. I'm really glad that I've always done the blood tests as otherwise we never would have known that Herbie has a low-calcium condition. At this point (she is almost 4 and has been on the BT system since she was ~15 weeks), we are reducing certain foods in her diet to aid in her calcium absorption (this is not something they'd recommend for a bird without this condition), and I'm supplementing with cuttle bone. My vet said a lot of people won't spring for the blood tests, and she's glad that I do with both my birds. My big boy, a 21 yo umbrella cockatoo, seems to love going to the vet. Due to a beak condition, he requires beak trims every few months. The condition was possibly caused by consistent improper beak trims or he was possibly hatched that way. I guess it's common in umbrella cockatoos, and I've got know way of knowing because I've only had him since May. That boy is a glutton for attention, and handles his beak trims really well. He's well liked by the staff.

Thank you for sharing your vet experience! I really wish my macaw was handled with as much grace at the vet as your birdos!

My vets mainly do physical exams (they called my bird handsome 😏), they’re less into annual blood testing and some of the test are not available in here, they’re not really big into natural nutrition - for a while I felt scolded for not giving my bird daily supplements and cutting off pellets (they don’t do dietary tests, and they really tried pushing me to use a supplement because most birds are nutrient deficient. the diet they recommend is 80% crappy pellets and 20 precent fruit and veggies + daily supplementation in water. I don’t know why I am SO pissy about this- we disagree and that is okay.), but lately one vet told me my home feeding looked awesome and diverse. Also I find that some vets don’t like the extra notes I bring with me to the vet (weight journal, and some notes about diet, sleep, feathering, behavior, sunshine, play, exercise and bathing) and some really appreciate it. I am always told by new vets that my African Grey is the oldest bird they treated, it actually makes me really upset because my bird is 33, he is middle aged, and I don’t like hearing that most local birds die young… I know it supposed to be a compliment that he’s being well and old but makes me feel icky and worried huh.

Yes, but I kept all that footage for the BTK channel 💙

YouTube is still figuring this community feature out, apparently you can’t get Community Updates on the iPad app, but you can on desktop web, iPhone app and desktop app.

My vet does a blood test for our annual check and last time it turned out that my AG had an infection. He had to be on antibiotics. But for the blood test, he could have gotten very sick. And yay you, Capri. Your dinner made me hungry.

Melonie

I'm just going to say I love the birds, but I'm always so impressed with Capri and how much she's learning from you guys, even outside of the bird world. You're raising a fantastic human being!

Aubrey

welp, apparently i missed it completely o_O

tzxazrael

tzxazrael

She passed before Rocko passed. They made an instagram post.

Li

Did Bluee get a check up too? Seems like her health has improved since she was first seen in her little snuggle hut thing.

Mckenna Miller

part 1 was the jan 8th video "jinx and ava accidentally met... eek!!!"

tzxazrael

well i seem to have missed something since the last time you had a "bick flock update" (or i forgot it, lol that's far from impossible); what's happened to Detka? i kept looking for her in the 1st video... "wait there should be 3 of them..."

tzxazrael

Wow I’m so glad you figured out Comet’s quirk about flying! Also, part 1???
