New editing style - seeking feedback!

This video is a pre-release masterclass we did. I chatted with some of you on my live chat this month on Zoom about using my VoiceOver style for video editing and sharing more "fails" where we just can't make progress with a bird in class for one reason or another.

Wanting to share more video stories like this one came about from someone attending a class and saying that they felt discouraged seeing everyone make huge success strides on the channel because it seemed like no one was struggling as much as they were at home. I realized I wasn't really sharing the unsuccessful stories because most of them were the same (not set foundations of diet and sleep) and I wasn't sure how to say that in a way that was helpful, and not preachy.

I also got stuck for a while in the false belief that viewers needed the subjects to tell their own story vs me telling it for them. But I've realized through doing some of these voiceovers that recapping the story in a more efficient way moves the lesson along and retains people's attention better, which when it comes to sharing videos, is truly the point to retain people's attention and get them engaged in the content.

So I would love your feedback on this style of editing vs how I've been presenting masterclass content in the past. This is just one example, and I want to point out that the amount of VoiceOver varies from story to story depending on location, audio accuracy and a lot more factors.

Thank you for your feedback in advance!

New editing style - seeking feedback!

Well, you know I love this kind of “evolution”! I still watch (and rewatch) old masterclass videos, and I definitely walk away with some new nugget of information every time, regardless of the editing style. Sometimes (often?) we need to hear/see a concept multiple times, and delivered in multiple ways, for it to sink in. I also really appreciate how much you really listen and care about our input. It is a rare thing, but just one more thing to love about you and Dave!

Julie K

Oh, good point! I hadn’t thought of that, but it is really true.

Julie K

I personally have enjoyed all your masterclass content in the past. I haven't had an issue with the delivery but I love this voice over too. And sharing fails can be just as essential for us people as allowing failure in the birds in training! I'm forever grateful for all the information you share! You guys rock! Keep up the amazing work!! I'm here as a cheerleader!

This way of editing, and having the voice over, is so much more helpful! It makes a complete picture if you will of what's going on, the why, the how, so one and so on. It helps explain so much more! It is absolutely a journey with our birds, and not a sprint, so having all of the failures and successes helps tremendously with that journey! Thank you for this new way of helping us all!

Mary Owens

Great video and very helpful. I'm so new at this that getting to see/hear what you're noticing is very helpful. And seeing mistakes helps me just as much as seeing successes. The successes show me what I'm aiming for and the "failures" show me what I may be doing wrong or how what I'm doing affects my bird. Gives a more complete picture for my brain to wrestle with. I need all the help I can get. 😂 My green-cheeked conure can be so quick in her reactions that I easily miss noticing them. Having you point out things I can notice with other birds makes the translation to my bird easier.

Banter/small talk = sweet, funny moments of humanity, charming or interesting exchanges

Foxelle

Also, the older I get, the more and more important I think failure is and embracing the beauty and lesson of it. So i really, REALLY enjoy capturing what failure looks like. It shows people how to creatively brainstorm on their feet when undoubtedly something won’t go as planned in training (or life!)

Foxelle

Great job! I would only request maybe like a 10% increase in the banter and small talk that some of the voice over replaces — i just like how it showcases your personalities ❤️ but yes, keep the voice over! It’s clear, succinct, and very informative. Great idea.

Foxelle

I really liked the voice over

Judith Mandolado

This works great! While I love hearing bird owners accounts some aren’t very succinct. In these cases I think it’s better just to get the story across as clear as possible given this is video format. I also loved seeing clips of the your flock of what was the expected behavior. Nice job!

Amy Elizabeth

Absolutely love this style video!!!

jessica

I love this style!! It’s so helpful especially when you explain what you are seeing and/or doing. Sometimes you see body language way before I do and I would miss it without the voice over!! Also love to see the (I hate to call the failures because they are still so helpful) ones that don’t work out exactly as planned.

Melanie Jones

I had a feeling that it was pieces of footage, any way this are my favorite!

Guy Goldstein K

Love this! Super valuable and educational.

Brittany King

Voice over is my fav. I also enjoy when you voice over an explanation of what you or Dave saw and why you did the thing after seeing the thing that I never even saw. Great video.

Melonie

I appreciate your detailed feedback a lot and I can be sure to schedule these sorts of videos apart and not back to back so it doesn't feel like the "same" over and over again. I think that's important to remember. Even masterclass videos in general, people seem to get over learning and want something light and fun so I try to give as much variety on the channel schedule as possible for brains to have a balance! xo

BirdTricks

Cool, yay!!

BirdTricks

Yay! That balance will likely vary depending on the quality of the footage so I am going to share another video tomorrow to see what you guys think...

BirdTricks

Thank you for saying that, I think I needed to hear what an impact it would have in order to see the value of sharing 'fails'. (I say that lightly, I know every experience is a learning experience and not a failure but ya know what I mean...)

BirdTricks

I believe people genuinely don't know how BIG of a deal it is and how much it impacts their bird's behavior. I think they think we can still make progress without it being perfect and I also think people truly don't understand how LITTLE birds eat so they don't know how much they're overfeeding. Luckily, a lot of my patrons come to classes and are able to sort of back me up in my diet talks and tell other students how much of a difference it made for them. It's really nice to have that kind of social proof and backing from real people who did it and are making progress in class over the people who attend and can't.

BirdTricks

I do feel that way but you're right, sometimes someone needs to hear it a different way and maybe one of these videos will get through to someone finally in the sense of saying it just how they needed it hear it. I like that perspective a lot. Thank you!

BirdTricks

I will definitely give this concept some thought. Masterclasses aren't filmed as one large, continuous file, they are more like 'camera on, camera off' so very much "pieces" of footage I put together. But I will think about how to go about unedited clips of masterclasses. I'm not quite sure what that looks like at the moment!

BirdTricks

Thank you!!! So VERY helpful! I L❤VE this new way! Great job to you all!!!

Kristie Cobb

I think this style is amazing. I truely believe it is more important for people to get a good grasp of why they may fail and to recognize it, before they push too far. When I started with birds, it was the most important failure point for me to realize, when I was pushing to far and how to recognize it and then how to improve my birds motivation towards working with me. I had a quite fearful budgie who would not step up at all and only when I started to recognize and respect his "no, I would rather not" I started to truely make progress. And today he even starts preening when he sits on my hand. And it may get repetetive if you do several videos that may seem very similar, but still: the behavior, charakter and body language of each bird is slightly different, the situation and actions of each owner is different. And even if people hear the same things over and over it helps as a reminder and sets your thinking straight. Even today my biggest problem is to call it a day, when I am motivated to work with my birds and my birds are not.

MisterTene

I like the voice-over much more! I feel like I get bored with hearing people explain why they aren't doing the basics/foundations. This was short, sweet and to the point.

Brickelle Gregory

Ditto on all above :) I like the extra explanation you give with the voice over in addition with what is said in class.

Janene Gscuba

I like the voiceover style. I also like that you still left in plenty of actual interaction with the subject. It was a good balance.

Holden Kendrick

I believe this kind of video will drive home to those who have decided that the diet and sleep is just something you preach to push your product. This is a very good example of why the proper diet is one of the first things you need to get straight. This should drive home the whys of constantly mentioning the proper diet and sleep as a foundation to successful training.

Sherry mathes

This is just out of curiosity, Why do you feel like people are coming unprepared with sleep and diet to the masterclass? Do you feel like some people are more receptive to advice, skill gaining, working on goals or getting a push in the right direction in a real life setting (rather than making sense of information independently or online)

Guy Goldstein K

I personally really like this style. We get to hear your insights more and get a better explanation of what factors are working for or against this specific bird. Also I know you always feel like you’re preaching diet and sleep but with so many people still struggling with it I think it’s necessary. You know never know what person might have a “light bulb” go off because they see the same problem with their bird and finally realize maybe it’s the diet. You can hear something a thousand times but until it directly relates to you sometimes you just don’t get it. And my favorite part of all was when you were explaining what a proper step up would look like and also added the clips to show it. That will really help the visual learners too.

Nichole Biedenback

Love this format! Your analysis and expertise gives us owners a much better explanation of what is causing the issue. Look forward to additional content.

Michele Crawford

I think you executed this perfectly, I would love seeing the “unedited” versions of Masterclasses (even the basic fails) and would love to watch them on here rather than on YouTube, I like being nerdy about these masterclasses lols
