Tasty Tuesday: Stuffed Sweet Potatoes (Foragers)

We had such a great time making these fun foragers for our birds. You all know how much I love using sweet potato as a diet conversion tool, and my birds love it to this day, so we put a twist on this recipe by making three completely different fillings to see what our birds preferences would be.

Our fillings represented a sweet filling, a green filling and a random one I suppose (haha). This is a recipe with a lot of room to have fun and use some ingredients you know your bird likes to get him/her involved. Sprinkling seed or crushed nuts in this is not cheating, it's just highly encouraging your bird to explore!

The reason we used the whole potato in this recipe is for the fun foraging side of things. The skin adds a whole other texture than the inside and just makes it fun for the birds to play with. We had a lot of fun seeing which birds picked which ones. If you make this recipe or get creative and make your own unique filling in yours, you will have to share what your bird liked the best! Have fun with this one! You can serve it on the counter, in a bowl or dish, or even on a platform perch in the cage.

I LOVE your cookbooks! This past November a Quaker Parrot, in really rough shape, joined our family. Chicory's diet was horrible. He ate a commercial food mix consisting of peanuts, pellets, and dried fruit - except he only picked out the dried fruit. This poor little bird had been living on tiny dried fruit chunks for most of his 8 months of life. He reeked of cigarette smoke and his wings had been crudely clipped at an incredibly short length. His condition was so sad to me. He did not take to the chop right away as I had hoped. It took weeks and weeks of transition, your bird bread recipe helped so much! In addition to transitioning him onto fresh chop, I used your cookbook recipes to help introduce him to fresh food. Your advice that playing with food is a step towards eating the food was a huge breakthrough for us! He now eats his fresh seasonal feeding chop every morning and an organic pellet in the evening. He also loves to shred dehydrated green leaves (Collard and Kale are his favorites) and play in your foraging recipes! He is on the path to better health thanks to Birdtricks!
