Hey patrons! This month I have for you a fun recipe that uses herbs, the shell of the egg, added calcium from cuttlebone and is great for diet conversion. I've used this recipe modified in all sorts of different ways to get birds to eat healthy new foods and try new things. Using the ground flax will start to familiarize the bird with that nuttier flavor and seek it out which makes it easier to get them to take to the seasonal feeding system.
Here are some ways I modify this recipe to get my birds onto the seasonal feeding system and/or pellets.
If working towards pellets:
- Add the powder of the pellets minimally at first, and gradually use more and more until you're using not only powder and crushed pellets, but whole pellets as well. Then lessen the amount of the other ingredients. If feeding tiny or small birds, use millet in the recipe as well so that it's cooked into the mixture and the bird really has to dig it out. The powder of the pellets is best added when you mix your raw eggs up vs after. If you do it after, it tends to sit on top whereas if you do it early, it's completely combined and can't be as easily picked around.
If working towards seasonal feeding:
- Combine a spoonful of seasonal feeding system with the raw egg mixture before cooking. This way, again, the mixture is entirely combined and won't be as easily picked through. Feel free to also work slower than that if necessary by adding fresh foods to mix you already know your bird enjoys.
Grating fresh food makes it less impactful for the bird to look at and be like NOPE, so consider getting the added fresh foods super fine when adding.
Like with the pellet method, you will gradually increase the SFS ratio to the rest of the mix and it's also good to be able to save this mix and be able to serve it to your bird cold so hormones aren't at play.
Hope you guys have fun with this one! Let me know in the comments how you play with it!
