Outside the Flock - Share a consult!

Hey all!

Every month we like to share an online consultation for you to have the opportunity to learn from. To book your own one on one consultation, go here

Notes from Kim: Cage guilt anyone? Meet Patti, she booked her consultation to discuss screaming and hormonal behaviors in her 4 year old Yellow Shouldered Amazon, Lucy. As you will hear in this video, Patti suffered a lot from cage guilt and with all the best intentions in the world was doing her best to provide Lucy with a fulfilling life while at the same time she was giving up a lot of her own freedoms in the process. I think this is an important subject that we all need to be reminded about from time to time. Bird care burnout is a real thing! It is important that we learn that to be be able to offer the best of ourselves when we are with our parrots that we learn to not only give them the gift of self entertainment and enrichment skills but that we take time to practice self care as well! Thank you Patti for being willing to share this important message with others!

Angie! I was just recently wondering about you and Pip! So glad things are going well! ❤️

This was enormously helpful! Kim did such a great job explaining how to manage several of the issues I (and probably everybody) has with their bird. I was fortunate to have heard Dave and Jamie's advice on cage guilt before I got my hahn's macaw. I've never let him have free reign in the house. We train and he "assists" in several morning chores to get his cage ready for the day. Kim reminded me that I need to shake up his routine. I don't do that enough. He's on seasonal feeding and pellets, but I have been lax in perfect portion measurements. Fortunately he isn't much of an attention screamer. Once he learned a few words he picked "peekaboo" as his contact call. He usually only screams a couple of times at dusk. I chalk that up to being a bird. It's funny that we were watching a recent masterclass video that had a screaming macaw. Oscar heard the macaw scream and very pointedly told it "PEEKABOO!" We laughed because it was like he was scolding the screamer and demonstrating appropriate behavior. 😂

I am so sorry Kelly about your Dad's diagnosis. I am glad that this video has helped with the cage guilt during this difficult time you are going through. It is one of the most common issues that come up during consults. I am all for bird owners prioritizing great care for their flocks but it should never be at the expense of our own mental health or above our own self care or the care of or commitments to our families and friends. We need to remind ourselves that teaching independence in our birds is as good for their well being as it is for ours. When we let go of that guilt and take care of ourselves we automatically become better owners for our birds and they only benefit from that!

OMG this is such a good video and so timely for me. My dad has been diagnosed with end stage liver cancer and was put on hospice last week and going to PA has been really hard because of trying to deal with the fact I've never had anyone watch my birds. My life revolves around them. Cage guilt is so real and I needed to hear so much of what Kim said today. THANK YOU!!!!♥️♥️♥️

That worked, Thank you!

I’m getting an error message saying “the video doesn’t exist.” Help?

Kim helped me so much with cage guilt. I have such a good relationship with my quaker since I am not always chasing her and trying to keep her out of trouble 🥰
