Bath training Zip the macaw (she's NOT a fan)

In today's video I need to apologize for my voice at the end - I got sick and lost my voice but wanted to get this content edited and explained for you all!

Please leave comments with your ideas on what I could have changed about this training session to make it more likely to be successful for Zip to be receptive to bathing. I'm so interested to hear your ideas.

Looking forward to sharing the next session with all of you...

Bath training Zip the macaw (she's NOT a fan)

I think you might have tried, increasing the treat value, training location, allowing her to watch other birds enjoying bathing, having the vacuum cleaner running or playing rain sounds on your phone.

I’m wondering if you just moved her outside in the sun without Zoom and that was where you got your success

I have what most of you are going to think is a crazy idea. Assuming she was bred and hatched in captivity, she wasn't brought up with the "natural" order of life. So, what if you watch your weather report and when you know that you are going to have a gentle warm rain, you place her aviary outside? If she's outside in the rain she would learn that there is no where to run and hide to get away from the water and that it's actually a pleasant experience? Obviously this wouldn't work in the winter time. Also, by doing this she doesn't learn to associate you with what she perceives as an unpleasant occurrence (at least in the beginning). Just a thought-

Oops...I was trying to add a line. That didn't work...lol. As far as what adjustments you made to set Zip up for success, there are so many possibilities: a different location, adding another bird other than Zoom, bathing her after she had been out in the sun for an extended time. I'm looking forward to seeing the next video to see the adjustments you made that led to your breakthrough.

I love watching you (and Dave) train. It is amazing to me that she came back to you. As someone who worked with students for 30 years, I love that you try something and if it doesn't work after several attempts, you make an adjustment.I used the same method in the classroom. 😊

Sunnier spot, bathing 2 at one time- the other one giving big bathing response, spray type (I don't think you did but I have birds like that totally different bathing styles), time of day.

I really enjoyed seeing your thought process and technique here. Amazing! I love seeing how you started spraying in her escape route. Brilliant! I really don’t think you pushed too hard at all. You were challenging her fear. I just watched an old video of Dave helping train a really scared bird and he talked about not coddling the bird. I saw that you didn’t let her give into her fear, but challenged her. I’m wondering what you would have done if you had pushed her too far and she decided not to come back. I know you would want to end on a good rep. What would that have looked like? My first thought was to move her aviary outside into the sun. I’ve also seen you bathe birds in the shower together with one that likes it and the one you are training, but I don’t think that would work well with Zip. Do you have the misters on your porch at this point? Wondering if taking her back there with the misters? My thought behind that is to replicate nature as much as possible. I have to say this is one of the best videos you have done. I love every part of it and how you open it up for learning on our part. I don’t even have a bird (hoping sometime soon) and I absolutely love this. Thank you and please do more like this!

Perhaps you moved her to a more sunny spot to train? That would also probably bring about more distractions, but might have encouraged her to enjoy the process more. I’m also wondering what time of day you did this session during? Perhaps you did it before/after breakfast?

I think you trained in a different space. Perhaps your back porch? Maybe you changed the treats somehow (type, size, etc.)
