In today's episode of BirdTricks Tuesday we are working with a cockatoo named Lucas at an in home consultation. Have you trained this trick to your bird yet?
Love it!

I would grab random objects from around your house, even leftover toy parts and see what your lovebird naturally will carry!

For Blueberry she does well with tiny little rings (like lightweight plastic ones) she can also pick up little rubber hair ties, she can pick up those little balls with holes in them... stuff like that.

I love this idea what would you recommend for a small bird that could get the same sounds and/or reactions

Are there ways to encourage picking up the item you want them to put in the bowl? My Jardine's naturally, like Lucas, started picking up the object and putting it in the bowl, but my lovebird seems to have no interest in picking things up. She does quite well putting a ball in a bowl if I hand it to her. I really like these trick training videos! Thanks!

I trained my CAG to retrieve a couple of years ago and then completely stopped asking him to do that trick. I was convinced he wouldn't do it, but today I put the little box out and scattered little items around him. To my surprise, he put everything back in the box and then purposely stared at me: "jackpot award, hooman!" 😅

Yay for cockatoo content! Their motivation can come from very different sources than other species and they gain positive reinforcement from so many things in the environment. Seeing training videos of cockatoos to help learn body language is so helpful!

Yay Lucas! This gives me hope for training the cockatoos that come into my home -- they are smart, but they can be so stubborn, too. It is clear that he is happy to get the treat every time, but he is also working for the acknowledgement and praise!
