BTT | Flight Training Series Part 2 (CLIPPED BIRDS)
Added 2019-03-19 14:00:02 +0000 UTC
We are so excited to bring BirdTricks Tuesdays back to you guys! I had wanted to do this for a while, and starting a Patreon was just what I needed to pressure me into "just doing it". Because at BirdTricks we like to encourage proper exercise through flight when possible with pet parrots, I thought an entire series on flight training that applies to ALL circumstances could be really helpful.
Not only do we talk about the differences in small birds vs medium vs large but in this part of the series we are talking about clipped birds who are CURRENTLY clipped or have been previously clipped.
Be sure to ask questions and give feedback so we can make sure this information applies to you and others as best we can and set everyone up on the best path to success.

Hey Nikki! We always say "start with what's working". Morgan, a Camelot macaw I worked with on flight training, would only fly to me if my back was turned as well. I rewarded it and eventually started turning around in time to catch her until it morphed into being able to call her!

Hi! I’m new to the community.. my GCC, Roo, is 7 months old. I bought him clipped at 5 months old. Currently, he only wants to fly to me if I’m walking away from him. If I set him down and go to walk out of the room he tries to fly. When I stand facing him and call him name (I’ve tried various distances) he just bounces. He looks so excited and interested.. but he won’t leave the T stand.

Use the seeds you're giving her in her daily diet but instead of giving them for free, use them for flight training.

She eats seeds and pellets. I have been trying chop but no luck with that. I'd like to move her to pellets and chop and seeds occasionally or as treats

I have a clipped budgie who is clipped but can fly fairly well. My biggest issue is that I feel she doesn't know her name and she picks and chooses when she wants to fly to me. She also doesn't like millet that much so rewarding her has been difficult.

I’m so glad to hear this-my new alexandrine has arrived at five months (I was told he was fully flighted) with clipped wings and part of his tail missing too :-(

Sometimes birds are encouraged by other flighted birds and sometimes they are discouraged by it. Comet, for example, is discouraged when it comes to flying multiple birds at once in the same direction (he's fine if it's opposite directions!) whereas Morgan was highly motivated and encouraged by it. Keep at it!

Both of my babies came clipped. My poor parrotlet was so poorly clipped he dropped like a rock. I was basically told I better keep them clipped. Luckily I knew of you guys before I got them.😉 I have days of being so scared of losing them but seeing my little guy flying around just makes me smile. Unfortunately he still won't fly to my finger across a room but we are working on it. My IRN is still clipped and so I hope I can get him more comfortable with his wings. You guys are great and so cute.

I feel like I’ve been waiting all this time for THIS video. Thanks, it really helps with my clipped bird. Can’t wait to see the baby video next. Y’all are too funny. Lol.

Sigyn is at the Velcro bird stage. As soon as I open the door he is in flight to me. I will start working on treating him only when I call his name first. Loki has started to fly more on her own. I think she gets jealous that Sigyn is getting more attention because he flies to me for it. They watched this video with me, so I hope they were paying attention :)

Without you guys, we never would have thought flight possible for Tango. But he was so determined and your belief in him and us is what has gotten us this far ❤❤ To those watching this that have clipped birds, don't give up and start small - the biggest gains we got with Tango are when he felt confident. The minute he stops feeling confident or we push him far beyond where we should have is the minute we stop progressing.
