Life with an Indian Ringneck is not what I expected at all!

I have a 3 year old male irn, had him since he was a few months old. (we don't know his hatch date) when the breeder delivered him to us, he was in a tiny wooden box that had chicken wire on the front. He advised us to not interact with him for at least 2 weeks. Worst mistake ever! However I believed him as everytime we went near his cage he would instantly drop off his perch, stand in the back corner of the cage, breathing heavily doing that noise touché does that u don't like and a panting hiss noise. Cleaning the cage floor or changing his food and water bowls was a nightmare! It sounded like he was being tortured. It was horrible. Not long after getting him I was rushed into hospital due to having a heart attack and stroke, 4 weeks later I was diagnosed with hyper idiopathic eosinophilia. After being discharged I spent a lot of time in my bed and asked my son in law to bring sky (irn) into my bedroom as I wanted to see him. 1 morning I woke up to sky standing on a perch close to my pillow, he was making such a sweet sound and looked like he was looking at me. I spent a while lay there talking to him, since that day he acts like he wants to interact with us, he will take treats from our hands and we will watch us and has learnt some phrases, his favourite is I love u! But he will not step up, he won't sit on any part of our body and when doing training he is very observant of our hands, if a finger moves we lose his cooperation! Lol. All that being said, yes I would really love a bird who would spend time on my shoulder and sit with me every minute of the day, but I love sky no matter what. I deal with mental health issues and know that often it's just too hard to get the confidence to do something and I won't push sky too far. We can go at his pace and there is not a chance of me ever getting bored of him or wanting to move on to a different pet! We have a love hate relationship, I love him and he hates me! I've joined ur patreon today hoping to find some tricks on helping him become less scared of us, I know he wants to be with us more, it's just helping him find that bit of confidence to do it. Lol. xxx

I started off on your seasonal feeding plan, pellets and I have been trying to see what is his favorite treat. I did realize after talking to the group on FB, I was feeding him a second meal of chop and alway had pellet available. I messed that up. I will be changing that immediately. Thank you for your response.

Patricia Lynn

Hi Patricia, a lot of getting a bird to take a treat has to do with what their daily diet looks like. I always do a diet conversion to up the value of the treats I use and increase the health of the bird while training. It makes it so that I don't need to worry about how often I am training because the foundational diet is correct. You can offer them in a dish and do a treat test like I talk about in my Family Friendly Parrot Formula. https://birdtricksstore.com/collections/family-friendly

BirdTricks

Curious, how do you get an Indian Ringneck to take a treat?

Patricia Lynn

Jesus, that butchery! I'm just now seeing this. I'm soooooo upset with that horrible clip! BECAUSE SHE WANTED A BIRD THAT COULD ONLY WALK???!! A bird!? BIRD! B I R D ! ?! A walking BIRD?!?!?!?! That baby is neurotic from it and he's doing the avian equivalent of sucking his thumb! Oh, I am so ANGRYYYYY!! AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH I want to cut her legs off because I only want a human that army crawls. Make sense???? NOPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Leia Gibson

I believe it’s their flock call to flight. I was talking to a chap who breeds them and he’s said that when you see a whole flock of IRN if one sees danger it makes this siren sound which calls the whole flock to fly so it has to be loud. Don’t know if that right or not but it makes sense to me. Especially when you google IRN’s. x

Kate Steward

Totally agree. Our IRN will literally fly around the house finding a reflection at every stop. We have to put buddy away when food is out because, like you said, he gets obsessed. They’re a little bird with a mighty ego......lol. X

Kate Steward

We have not tested that theory - I mean, they’ve both been on the net and not gone through but I’m sure with enough time it could be possible.

BirdTricks

Question on the batting net: Can touche or lefty fit through the holes? I've been considering getting one of these to flight train outdoors and provide some sun but I'm not sure if the holes are big enough that she could flight to it and climb out.

Jennifer Perez

Yep. He always does.

Wendyrx

Aw that is terrible! Yeah, I would try to make it so he can't break them but birds seem to find a way.

BirdTricks

BREAKING * not breathing. Stupid autocorrect! 😡

Wendyrx

I posted this on YouTube by accident so I deleted it there & so here it is again. His poor tail feather! My Princess of Wales has the same issue but he can't seem to grow back enough wing feathers to fly.. He can't even get enough height to get back on the cage that's only maybe 18 inches off the floor. He also can't seem to remember he CAN'T fly.. So he's breathing feathers all the time. I had to put him on a smaller cage so MAYBE he'll be able to grow some back? I really need help with him! 😭

Wendyrx

Good to know it’s for sure moreso their alarm call. 👍🏼 That in itself makes it easier to deal with!

BirdTricks

I have a ringneck named shadow 10 months old and he does this high pitched scream as well only really when he is upset or tired. I complete agree with it being not such a great noise my way of dealing with it is to put him on a stand to calm down or to put him in the cage to calm down. I have found recently he does it when he wants something such as my food or Mabey just to talk to him.

Hannah Basford

I am super keen to see how you desensitise Touché. Like, I learnt a lot with introducing individual items (thank you Morgan!) but no idea with how to desensitise a bird to just their general environment.

Cindy Lewis-Bryan

Do you think he's anxious for a cage where he can feel comfortable and safe? It seems he was reluctant to leave the aviary, and as you said is just anxious in general. Breaks my heart to see him so not confident in himself

Abby

Little bit loud

Meaghan Beverage

Well sorry you got bit! But yeah, that sound is not so pleasant!

BirdTricks

The smashing into the net was telling me he was just freaked - the aviary was moreso when I came to bring him in and he thrashed around. And the trip to and from freaks him out. His senses just get on overload. I’ll try to show more of that stuff!

BirdTricks

So interesting!

BirdTricks

Good to know!! Thanks for sharing. 💕

BirdTricks

I watched this video with my two green cheek conures, one mostly ignored it and the other was obsessed. She hung from the top of the monitor to look closely. She seemed excited but not agitated, until Touche let out one of his high-pitched yelps... and then she bit me. I guess she's not a fan of that call either! The story about his previous home was pretty awful. I imagine it would be pretty hard to build trust with this little guy, I'm so glad you took him on.

JESSICA R SULLIVAN

Oh poor Little buddy, Touche. You can see how much he loves to be in your presence- but is still so frightened. Im really enjoying watching how you work through it- and I’m sure this work will result in a better quality of life for him. That’s a big deal.

Bree Therese

I don't know how you catch on to things so quickly in the moment - it's crazy! Like oh sitting versus standing for a trick...I never would think about that! Also, my initial reaction to seeing him content outside and then crazy inside would be "he wants to be outside! He doesn't like it in here as much! He got a taste of the great outdoors and now this soft couch life is boring" - so I guess my question is why/how did you come to the conclusion of not taking him outside again? The batting cage I could definitely see but the aviary I couldn't (always wanting to learn!!) I'm so excited to be on this journey with you guys - I think Touche is going to take some more time but it's going to be worth it!

Ashlyn Barnes

I am so grateful you took him in. Both of them really. I am a softly for Ringnecks, yes even their high pitch screams, and I look forward to seeing how much he has changed at the end of this. 💕

Kayla Moore

Our ringneck makes the same awful high pitch call when he’s upset. He’s also very jumpy, nervous and he’s become territorial of his cage. He has bonded with my husband more than myself and doesn’t want to be touched but just wants your presence. When we first brought him home he definitely had a honeymoon phase where we thought he had this great personality but as time went on he’s shown the bad habits previous owners instilled. He’s human food obsessed, phone obsessed and loves his reflection. Recently we’ve wondered if he’s bonded with his reflection because he’s so attached to it.

Autumn White

Two things. My ringneck who is 9 weeks old does the same thing with human food. I’ve never given him human food before and I was his first (and only) home. He will also chew on his foot, when he’s bored, excited, or anytime really. So I wonder if these are just ringneck things or if it’s just a coincidence.

Christina

Oh yes, this mating season has birds in all sorts!

BirdTricks

Yeah there are times where I think he's so capable and then times like that where I'm just like ughhhh it looks horrible!

BirdTricks

I felt the exact same!!!! And that would be awesome if you end up with Touche after all this!!

BirdTricks

It definitely was!

BirdTricks

is in the mating season, so are Indian ring, very galagious :) the females are much softer and scream a few hours continually :)

Daniel

I can see why it bothers you. You can really see the hacked clip they did on him when he was by the window and acting like he was gonna fly. 😥

Frieda Schnell

Touche reminds me so much of my Ringneck! When I took my Ringneck into have his nails clipped we met Touche and he was talking to my guy like crazy! He was so excited to meet him! It was adorable!! We have even considered adopting him because of how much he liked JJ.(my Ringneck) I have found that ringnecks just aren't really cuddly birds but they love to hang out with their people. I think I have been able to give mine head scratches twice and it was when he was sleepy. That call he makes is definitely one mine makes when he is startled. I also agree that their cute little voices make them deceiving. I found that when training my guy I had to be careful because I was putting aggression on cue. I had to fall back some to undo that. I'm glad you guys taught me that. They are super easy to train I have found so I think you will go a long way with him. So fun to see this cuties since I have met them both!!

Wendy Cottingham

outside might just to much for him to handle

Meaghan Beverage

Outside might n

Meaghan Beverage

So far Lefty is fairly quiet and I haven’t heard the high pitch, but he also does change as easily emotionally as Touché does.

BirdTricks

Awe, thanks! 💕

BirdTricks

I think the hardest part of rescue animals is we don’t know there past. My first thought when I saw this was maybe you built trust and when he went outside it blew the trust bank. Maybe he once got out and had a bad experience and maybe that’s why he had a bad clip. He could associate the outside with his wingclip or a bad experience. I’m just guessing cause we will never know but he is a different bird after coming in from outside so it leads me to believe that outside was not a good experience for him. Poor guy just needs more time to build trust and touch training will give him that. You are empowering this little guy to be the best he can be. Can’t wait to see the progress you get with him. Not sure if you have heard much from lefty but quakers have a annoying high pitch also. I have a quaker name Ruffles and he will do his high pitch when he wants my attention.

Nicole Bledsoe

I'm so sad for the poor guy, he's just been misunderstood!

Brittany Eilers

wow, your hair looks really cute like that!
