Alteration to My Tiers: Pre-Releases of the Lefty Series

I've decided to add a little something to my cockatoo+ tiers, and that's pre-released videos of Lefty the Quaker Parrot's progress here on Patreon.

This video is not available publicly on my YouTube channel until June 20 so you guys are getting these videos VERY early but I thought they would give a broader perspective of what's going on with Touché as well. So I really hope you guys enjoy the early-access to the Lefty series!

Alteration to My Tiers: Pre-Releases of the Lefty Series

I think it's awesome Leftie picked Capri. I found that true of our Quaker SmartyPants (named because he learned to open his cage on the 2nd day we had him and talked a lot too). He picked me and my youngest daughter. He tolerated my husband. He picked on my older daughter and would try to land on her head all the time. I was told over and over that Quakers are 1 or 2 people birds. Not sure how true it is but it did seem to be the case with ours. I miss my little green dragon and how he'd greet me "good morning" as soon as I stepped out the bedroom... tell me "night night" when he was ready to sleep... and call my husbands name and the cat "kitty kitty kitty".

First, I always get a little concerned when I hear people with birds getting respiratory symptoms, as there are both severe pulmonary allergies and pneumonias specific to bird handlers (as I’m sure you are aware!) so don’t let it drag on for weeks/months without seeing a doctor if it doesn’t resolve (sorry, I’m a doctor so that’s my little PSA). Second- I SO love seeing Capri with Lefty. Too cute!

Meredith Lynn

That's so Quakerish. Not having a cage for him is probably helping with the territoriality. It's so wonderful that's he's chosen your daughter.

Cheryl Kinkaid

Thanks, it's lingering but hopefully soon!

BirdTricks

I hope you're feeling better!

It's too early to say - it would seem this way but we leave for over a month for our Australia tour, and then do our fall fundraising tour from October-December so how Lefty would do on the road is a whole other thing. I tend to feel at his age it would not be ideal for him. Plus, I prefer Capri prioritizes her own birds, like the sun conures and galahs, and understands how project birds time with us is limited so she learns to make the most of that time and appreciate it for what it is. Even though it's hard to want to invest when you know they aren't staying...

BirdTricks

I think if you had her trained as well, you would not see this problem but if she doesn't understand click/stick = treat and isn't having fun via training nor does she want the treat then you (nor she) is really set up for success <3

BirdTricks

Right?! Touche is proving to be the harder of the two for sure, though.

BirdTricks

It's done through desensitization and constant training/communication which if done wrong can lead to the exact opposite effect!

BirdTricks

I just can't get over the difference on these two birds!! I knew Touche would want to interact but Lefty just seemed to not want anything to do with anyone! Capri is going to have a hard time seeing them leave. I love seeing their progress no matter how fast or slow you move with them!

That's awesome that everything is going so well. Great job Capri!! We're all very proud of you. :)

Ellie Keely

Great job Capri! Your doing such a wonderful thing for Lefty! I can see why your Mom is soooo proud of you! 😀👏❤️🦜

Kim Russell

This is so awesome

Thank you again for sharing this journey. I was looking forward to it a lot, but I was also scared that it would be a little heartbreaking. So far it's the opposite, yay! Capri and Lefty, what a pair! She looks so competent and capable, and they are definitely adorable together.

Thanks for the updates. And we love watching your daughter interact...awesome!

Not fully. Sometimes she wants to touch the stick, usually she ignores it. My male loves target training and interacting with me. He also loves treats. I don't think she has figured out that the stick equals treats, even though she watches me treat Sigyn for touching it. Or maybe she is just very stubborn, or I haven't found a treat she will work for yet. Since she wont touch the stick reliably, I can't get her to move to touch it yet.

I’ve recently picked up a rescue IRN, Arlo. He has super low confidence. He has had a lot of trauma in his life prior to living with my husband and I. He LOVES target training (probably because he loves almonds). I’d love to hear about how you work through low confidence. Just to give me some ideas while I’m working through targeting, stepping up and beyond. Capri is doing such a fabulous job- it really drives home how important clear communication is in building a strong relationship with your bird.

Bree Therese

Is your female target trained?

BirdTricks

Ha ha ha this is hilarious! You were thinking you were getting a big challenge with two little terrors, when they actually turned out to be actually sweet little angel birdies! 😅😂😂 WHAT a disappointment! You can't write a script before working with birds! So, I'm gonna make a prediction...Lefty is going to be the bird of her very own that Capri has been wanting for so long....I'm calling it first!

Caroline Donald

My male quaker is super friendly and never cage aggressive towards me. My female on the other hand is very territorial and warns me constantly about getting too close to her stuff. I have swing out bowls so I can feed without getting bit. Once out of the cage she is the nicest bird and loves to cuddle and take naps on me. I have to trick her to get out of her cage so I can clean it, and I have to cage her in a different room while I'm cleaning or she will find a way to get to me and attack. Are males less territorial? I'm glad Lefty isn't showing aggression, but I was kind of hoping he was cage territorial so I could see how you deal with it. I love my Loki and I don't get mad at her for biting me, but I wish it was easier to clean her cage and put in new toys and such without getting hurt. Lefty looks like her and he is just so darn cute.

Cherene Luksan

I know you've said you have no control over who adopts them but based on the bond being formed with Capri would you consider keeping Lefty?
