How to train an Indian Ringneck

Comments

Okay thank you for your insight and I know that was loaded question. Our IRN has away to go but she is doing well with in door flight thanks to your videos. It’s something I would love to experience with her but also I can see all the risks and then adding on her size. But ultimately thank you for all the information that you put out!

It depends on the bird and person honestly. Based on my experience with Touche, no, but I never even got to experience him fully flighted so it's not much to go on. I'd say the same for ChiChi because I never saw him fully flighted either. I've seen videos of people free flying them in other countries where they seem to be a lot more popular.

I have a 4 month old female IRN and she is very very inquisitive of everything. She is fully flighted and flys all over our house. I have so much fun flight training her! We have reached the point flight training where I can go around a corner and call her to teach object permanence. I might be obsessed with watching all your Jamie because I watch them over and over to make sure I understand and can train my birds to my best ability. But my IRN definitely chalenges me feel overwhelmed at times. Would you ever out door flight train a IRN?

kaitlyn halitsky

Yes it is, I wrote you back in DM as well.

Sorry I posted before I remembered to ask a couple questions. my irn is terrified of the chop stick and the clicker. what else can I use to touch train her. When I do capture something I want her to do I say" good job or good girl" and give her a treat. Is this ok to do until I get her over her fear of the chopstick and clicker?

I got my female turquoise clear tail irn name SkyFall after seeing one on one of my green cheek conure Facebook groups. My male pineapple green cheek conure is a huge cuddle monster. My irn on the other hand is not. She is ok with stepping up but thinks that fingers are the devil. She is a very curious bland smart bird. She loves to sit on my knee or on a travel cage I have in my room. I hope one day she will allow me to give her scratches but if she doesn't I'm ok with that as well.

I got my baby Cleo because I just liked their nature. Cleo is amazing to train and is very expressive, she knows how to tell you to back off with a cute little growling noise, she never bites but is very vocal about "hey I don't like this" which is easy to read. I got lucky with my girl as she loves to sit on my knee and get head scratches, she loves getting the area between her eye and her beak rubbed gently for some reason.

And wow he’s amazing

I have a Ringneck I love him to bits. He’s loving in his own way. They are not cuddly birds like others are. But he is very loving in his own way. And very much wants to be with you. He will sleep on a perch in my room more then sleep in his cage. I think he feels more secure.

Can he see properly

You can try and look up Indy-Bindi or FaceBeak on Facebook, they have IRNS. I have two, a 8yr old male and a 1yr old female. I've had the male for almost two years. He came from a home where the owner didn't work with him, so he was just left to himself. Plus they had a dog that would chase birds (also got two cockatiels from them, one with half a wing and the other with badly healed chestbone, from dog attack). I still can't touch him (make him step up) but he'll take treats from my fingers and he surely do enjoy my presence (sometimes he'll call for me) The female was a recent add, since I feared he was maybe feeling lonely. But found out that he doesn't care, at all. He'll flee if she approaches. She's not tame either, will take treat quickly and leave. A trick I tried on my male to make him familiar with my fingers was to hold on to the treat a little tight so that he would get a bit curious about my fingers also. This way he figured that my fingers aren't a threat if touched. I work with them everyday, but it's a slow process, but patience will prevail 😁 I find IRN facinating and so beautiful. I love all birds, but these just got me more.

I’d use a dish to deliver the treat or place it on the counter top you’re training on.

I have always wanted a bird and my Indian ringneck kind of fell into my lap from a friend you had a breeding pair. I helped hand raise him and she gave him to me. All was good until he flew into the floor and my wiener dog came after him. I snatched him off the floor and ever since then he does not like hands. I have been bit hard enough to draw blood. I would like to start touch training but trying to give the great I think would be challenging as he doesn't like hands. He lunged at my hand when I do give him treats. Any suggestions on how to get him to trust the hand?

Sherry Schauble

No, it can’t. What you saw was an implementation of random rewarding (FR2) frequency of reinforcement 2 which means every second trick done successfully gets one treat. We go into this in a Bird Tricks Tuesday coming up.

BirdTricks

Can the sound of the clicker be used as a reward in itself, or must it always be followed up with an actual treat? I noticed a double click was used, possibly unintentionally, in a clip earlier on in the video, but only one treat was given...?

Thank you!

Too funny!

I don’t think I would ever want a ringneck but there is one YouTube ringneck I like to watch - Bowie! so maybe he demonstrates some of the positives. When he says tickle tickle and purrs with head scritches it just sort of melts your heart. He’s very curious and it’s fun to watch his reaction to things, from his eyes pinning to his really excited “Wooo!” But even with Bowie he’s often as you say— curious and interested but not wanting touching all the time. https://youtu.be/wnaiGPgYsNU Here’s an example of some of the “cute” appeal :)

Lefty and Capri are just sooooo freaking cute!!

This video is awesome it is very informative and I am very happy to see him flying as much as he is

Meaghan Beverage

I got my ringneck bc I wanted a bird that would hangout bc I already have a grey that likes to cuddle lol and I could spend my time cuddling my grey and have the ringneck on my shoulder. BUT mine is so cuddly lol

Gianna

Mine was a rescue- but I’ve always liked ringnecks. They’re super cute and I love the talking. I’m not totally bothered if he won’t let me cuddle him. I hope I can give him a head scratch one day- but just getting him out of his horrid situation is enough for me.

So much progress with little Touche' and his flying is awesome. I never would have dreamed he'd be able to do those turns and fly so far so soon. Great job Touche'. Oh, you too Jaimie. =0 ) LOL

Kathy Surber

He says "kiwi" more clear, but still says what sounds like "really" sometimes too. Still trying to translate that guy's vocab!

Added you! 💕

Just became a patron! My Instagram is _C_Leigh_, I requested to follow the BirdTrickslive ig :)

My ringneck is a lot like Touche'. The thing I have found is he is super smart but the side of them that doesn't want to be touched makes training tricky. I think it has to be the voice because from what I have seen at least most males are not cuddly! Mine will literally sit with his beak on my lips or cheek as long as I don't reach up to touch him.😂 Wanting to step up beak first took me awhile to fix! I always thought Touche was saying 'Really' but kiwi is so much cuter!! I love that he is wanting to fly and can fly as well as he can considering his horrible clip!
