Keeping pet parrots CAGELESS?!

An update on Touché and this whole going-cageless thing!

Keeping pet parrots CAGELESS?!

Touché trying to beg for more training while you were talking to someone was so cute and endearing aweee. I don't think Indian Ringnecks are my type of species either. Dave talks a lot about the 5 love languages and even though I haven't read that book yet, I think I must be touch. At least with animals, people I want 6ft away lol. As incredibly challenging as it is owning a cockatoo, I love Cheeky to pieces and I love, love, love, cuddles. If something ever happened to Cheeky I'd want another cockatoo or a conure or some type of lovey dovey species. I just can't resist squeezing their cute faces lol Touché would hate me.

Im learning so much from you! I’m a total novice about birds .. 🙈 but I was just wondering ... since ringnecks are so active, how do you keep Touché busy during the day? just wondered if he was busy with toys and chewing and foraging and stuff that it would help him stress less? Maybe my question is stupid and you already have though of all that. I apologize in advance.

I think Touche will be fine but I think Lefty could be easily misunderstood with a typical cage set up. I think he needs someone whose world will revolve around him.

BirdTricks

Do you think they will transition well to a typical cage after they leave you?

Jennifer Perez

Thanks, Jodi!

BirdTricks

Not a normal one but an aviary and likely an outdoor one on my porch. I don’t own a normal one 😂

BirdTricks

I don’t think I could ever get away with this with my galahs!

BirdTricks

Will you be at any point using a typical cage? How will it be going from careless to caged once he's adopted? I had my quaker cageless for few months when i first got her. She had a cage, but it was always left open, once she began to get too comfortable exploring dangerous things we started leaving her out only she we were home. She definitely rejected that change and gets super anxious being in her cage now. Ch

I don’t understand how you get the birds to stay on the perch lol! My galah has preferred spots so I’ve tailored them to him but yes most of the time he is out of the cage though loves to slee in it through the night until we are all up. Never had a problem with that. But he just don’t like the cage!

Ok Jamie Liegh I want to say if you ever want to talk to me on the precautions of free birds I'm happy to do so, p.s. it's Jodi Boswell. I have 4 birds on a cageless setup. My tiels, my princess parakeet and my timneh. One of the most important things I've implemented is I use a sheet to cover the entry to the kitchen and entry way. For foods I use large feeder bowls with more than I know they will eat but it's super appealing and large water stations. Hope this helps, I have many more so please let me know, but yes the meds is extraordinary! But worth it as I've increased independent play and confidence I would never have been able to other wise. So good luck and I truly have so many little things I just want to know what you're interested in hearing...

Jodi

Thank you for this post, it was super educational. You have such instantaneous success with most birds and I love watching that, but I think seeing how you handle the hard ones is extremely helpful for people like me with less experience and less understanding of what's happening when there isn't immediate success.

Agreed!!

When I got my IRN he was handfed but the people who were suppose to get him backed out so he wasnt handled for about a week until I decided to take him. He was very difficult I have to work with him daily or I feel like he can become crazy really easy!😂 He is super smart but it's just different with him then the other two. I love him to pieces but honestly I would not recommend them to most people. When I hear about people wanting one for a first bird I cringe. He has his moments but they are definitely not cuddly birds!! That being said I think Touche will be a great bird for someone who has experience!!💚💚
