Embrace your pace with your bird

Touché has a lesson for us all this week!

Embrace your pace with your bird

Comments

This also applies to my life as a disabled woman with a Traumatic Brain Injury I sustained 5 years ago. I went through a brain injury recovery program, and their mantra was pacing and planning. Having been a type A personality and doing a million tasks back to back pre incident meant it was hard to accept having to only go to 30 minutes of class, then going out to the hallway for my brain to get a break. But embracing your pace is so truly important in every aspect of life. I always compare myself to others online, especially anyone in the animal field since I'm an aspiring veterinarian/animal trainer. I need to stop because it's so counter productive. Now that I'm taking things 1 step at a time, I may finally graduate high school at age 20 after years of pain and frustration. Another thing to note is that astronauts don't look at the big picture initially, they would panic. The protagonist in the Martian survived because he solved 1 problem at a time. Remember you are always enough and to embrace the journey like Jamie said

This video is amazing, I love it so much. First, Capri finally gets to cuddle Touche which was adorable. Then your chat to us about embracing our pace with our birds and training really resonated with me. I think you should mention this on your youtube channel to the public as well. You're right in assuming some of your viewers compare themselves to you. I do so all the time, and I beat myself up for not having Cheeky flight trained fast enough, or tampering down his seasonal aggression.

Thank you for this video. I've been concerned that it's taking so long to get Fred to step up. But he is an old guy, so I will just embrace his pace and love the time we spend together. =0 )

The little voice at the end is so adorable!!! Great video overall & very informative. Thanks!

I needed this one today. Two days ago Arlo turned into a devil wrapped in blue feathers. (Can someone tell him we’re still a week out from Spring so he should slow his roll on the hormones?!) But this is him and nature. His hormones will settle. Tomorrow is a new day and any progress forward is still progress forward.

Thanks a lot Jamie for this great video and the insight. Yes! I couldn’t agree more with you on the importance of recognizing how fast or how slow to work with a bird. My Eclectus Twist is incredibly fast at learning tricks. He will pick them up in minutes and enjoys them always. HOWEVER, he is incredibly slow at accomplishing trust of human hands. I know that I have two paces with him: the fast lane of tricks and the “old lady driver” lane of handling and trust.

This is EXACTLY something that has just come to light for me. I think being a new bird 'parrent', I get really enthusiastic and want to see progress all of the time, which I've recently learned actually impedes progress. Mainly because I start rushing trying to do too much all at once, I lose focus, and my GCC is like "what the hell you do you want from me?!", ie I'm confusing the hell out of her. The last few days I've slowed it way down, and whaddya know, she's more relaxed, less nippy, and voila! Making progress! Like another person posted, it also follows through to my own life - where am I spreading myself thin and trying to do too much? Thank you guys for all the time you have given and are giving, and sharing your skills and experience for the benefit of parrots and their 'parrents'. It's so incredibly valuable!

Hi Jamie, I have a 5yr old IRN named Jinx. HE has trained DADDY very well. He's loving when HE wants...I think the proper words would be what my wife says...."well you wanted and independent bird....you got one ". Jinx rules the whole house. and I love it. He's not at all skittish at all. He has to help me with anything I do...if I'm fixing things around the house, he will fly over and walk down my arm to inspect and assist what I'M doing. Even try to take the tools away to doit himself. So give Touche' some time. IRN's are independent thinkers. Now Jinx can read my mind and apparently I can read his. If I'm worried he will come and cuddle, if I'm upset with someone he will get right in the middle of the discussion. If daddy's tired , he will watch me sleep and wake me up with a kiss when my nap time is too long.......if i scold him he will pay me back later if he feels it's unjust....Daddy is HIS Human, and he knows it. IRN's are special. They are yours, while still being themselves. Enjoy the challenge! They are like no other birds. jim
