Diet Conversion Trick: SMALL Birds (SO CUTE!)

We have an entire section on diet conversion in our new budgie course SPECIFIC to budgies because they are often a lot more difficult to convert than medium to large parrots (at least in our experience!) Also, Blueberry came to us on a seed mix which he was weaned onto... it can be much harder to convert birds who were weaned only onto seed as well.

This is one of the tricks I used!

If your bird came to you on the crappy pet store seed, simply find an organic seed or make your own and make your first conversion that. This trick was done using an organic seed mix. If your bird refuses the organic seed mix, you can do this with the original one you were given just to get him interested. This is a sweet potato/yam ball.

Once your bird is eating this, you can then incorporate the feeding system into this as well (still with the seeds) and less and less seeds each time! YUM!

Thank you so much! So encouraging!!!

Yes, definitely! You can also eventually puree spinach into the potato mix as well as it won't change the flavor yet will get some greens in him!

Would this work on cockatiels? Just got a 8 week old and the breeder gave us seed. Hoping to get him on a pellet/parrot chop diet, but he’s in LOVE with the seeds

I would offer it to Blueberry a few times per day. Usually when he starts getting on the ground "foraging" that would tell me he's open to trying the foods again (even if he is looking for something better, haha!) so it ended up being as often as he was looking... maybe 3-5 times per day.

How many times do you need to feed budgies in a day? If I want to convert them to bird trick diet?

I didn’t have yams, so I used a less ideal alternative. I wanted to find a fruit they like since apples and pears weren’t working even when chopped small. Bananas seems like such a universal hit with birds but mine didn’t take them as chunks. So I put some chia and sesame seeds on mashed bananas 🍌 and Willow took it! She seemed to enjoy it.
