Thank you!!! So glad you like it!!

I loovee this course! It was a great reminder of training tools I already knew but needed a refresher of and a good mix of new tips that are gonna help me in future training sessions! It was also so fun to watch. I have a cockatiel who is completely disinterested in touch training. She not scared of the stick, she’s not angry at the stick, she’s not even curious about it. I’m gonna try using her old seed mix or millet as a treat and using your tip on getting her to bump the stick on her way to the treat because she is just not understanding it yet. I can’t wait to train some of these tricks to my budgies, I have to agree with Jamie that the sound of their little feets pitter pattering through the tube is the cutest thing in the world! I also gotta say that when Dave asked Jamie if she was crying when talking about Capri understanding why she couldn’t pet Blueberry I had a tear in my eye 😂 maybe I’m just a crybaby but it was such a proud moment.

I think closing them off from the cage temporarily while training would be fine - and learning to be strategic when giving the millet! Maybe you can attach some perching off the outside of the cage specific for training.

Thanks so much for busting those myths about the “rules” for when you first take your budgie home . Unfortunately I followed all the advice I found on google and the bird books so the budgies are very skittish and it can be hard to entice them to leave their cage which will be challenging to fix. When they are out should I close the cage door so that they only have access to the top of the cage and their stands? Or is that mean and tricky? I’ve started target training but it is difficult trying to do it with two budgies as one budgie will be doing well and inevitably the other one will run over to steal the millet. It’s confusing and frustrating for all of us! If I attempt to take a budgie away from the cage area it freaks out and just wants to go back. My 4 year old daughter loves watching Capri with Blueberry (omg the cuteness!!)... also that fun happy intro tune! Thanks again for putting yourselves out there and inviting us all into your lives.

Try having some at different lengths so it's not only going wayyyy down... but short distances too. We also used a variety of ropes and ladders as well.

BirdTricks

I’m trying to follow the budgie course for my tiels! Question- all 3 were (BADLY) clipped, so they can’t fly, they can barely flutter to the ground, it’s horrible (we will NEVER clip). You mentioned making ropes and how you taught Blueberry how to climb up and down. I made a rope going diagonally from the floor to the other corner of the top of their perch stand, and I’ve targeted them to go up but none will try going down, not even with targeting. They will stay up there until I take them off. How can I help them learn to go down? I want them to have more freedom, confidence and control. Thank you in advance, and thank you for all your videos, blogs and information! I’m digesting as much as I can and I’ve learned SO MUCH! Side question, are tiels too small to free fly? I’ve seen people’s videos on Facebook but I don’t think I’ve seen you guys do small birds, and I wouldn’t even think about it (way down the line with TONS of training) if you guys don’t recommend it.

So glad, sounds like everything is going at a great pace!

Hey, your advice works!! I also started him off in the smaller room (we named him marshmallow). Sorry in advance for the long comment, I just want to share with you guys of our progress. We making small step at a time He looks more comfortable and rooming around more freely in the smaller room. On day 3: I noticed Marshmallow was scared of my husband (David), wont move at all when David was around on day 4 (this was yesterday) David could do the target training with him no problems at all. He was so nervous when the curtain on our big glass sliding door was open, so I left the curtain closed on day 4 and do some target and stepping up training, he did really well. I put the T stand about 2 m from the curtain. Today - Day 5: I tried to train him with the curtain half open for 1st session, and by the 3rd session he did really well with the curtain fully open. I started training marshmallow to hop onto my finger this morning and after he looks very comfortable with it, I build the distance and asked him to fly and land on my finger on our last session today. More because his body language showing that he wants to do it, so I took the chance. He did 6-7 perfect recall from 1m distance as that the furthest he could go with his clipped wings. I am so proud of him. Thank you so much guys for all your advice. I do have questions tho: Did I move too fast? Should I slow down a little bit with the training? Thank you so much Birdtricks, you guys are awesome💕!!

Thanks. Will try

Blueberry can spend hours on our stands just chirping and preening, sometimes napping, but he often changes stands quite often since we only keep food and water on one of them and not the others. Maybe try starting your budgie on a least favorite spot so he is more likely to move himself around.

BirdTricks

Thank you so much! I hope you will leave that as a review on our website, hehe, I appreciate your words so much! xo

Honestly, I was freaking out about how little time Dave spent training Blueberry. Then I finally let go of thinking Dave had to do it all and I started working with him, and allowing Capri to do the same once some initial tricks were taught. In the beginning Blueberry would hardly last at all in a session, losing interest after maybe 5 reps, but as he started to learn he could learn... sessions starting lasting longer and being more often. Now he will come find us in the house to let us know he wants a chance to earn some treats!

They'll take stuff from my hand, but only pellets millet and seeds lol... they don't want to even try safflower, sunflower, nuts, pumpkin seeds, etc. so millet it is for a while! They look at me like I'm crazy, then start looking for the millet lol... I started trying to switch them to the natural feeding system this morning, they're picking but not much, but we'll get there! Then I'll work on more treats! But the past two days, with millet, I've been able to start target training all 3! One is lazy, she'll only do it if she can reach with 1-2 steps, and the baby is LOVING it! You can see him start looking for the stick the second he finishes his bite of millet :). Any ideas of getting them to try other seeds? Or even better, get them to start eating chop? They didn't seem to happy this morning lol

Thank you so much for the video. I learned a lot. Currently my new baby budgie is on his day 3 at home. He only moves when I played the budgie chirping video on youtube, otherwise it spend most of the day perching on 1 spot almost never move. I have put some perches around the house hoping he will explore more. He was completely active when I picked him up from the breeder. He can fly short distances as was partially clipped. I dont want to play the budgie video too much as it make him wants to find the other bird so much. Is this normal? Should I do something?

Imelda Hill

I got up really late today due to some bad sleep issues (thank God for my sis this morning who took care of Fred, my little cockatoo. So I didn't see your email till late today. But I had to watch the whole thing right then. It's awesome. Now I wanna go get my Budgie. Heeheehee. In this training video you have given so much important info as well as the cute and funny. I found myself saying "oh yah, that's a great tip" and "oh wow, that worked so good" and laughing till there were tears in my eyes. I will be recommending this training bundle to friends who want to get a Budgie. I love supporting Bird Tricks as a patron and of course I love the perks. 😉 You two are so important to the bird world, sharing your expertise and knowledge in such an understandable and doable way. Love you guys. Stay health, stay safe. 💖

I got a pair of cockatiels too. I just leave one in the cage while I train the other outside. As long as they can see each other, they don’t call to each other and are alright. They don’t get in each other’s way. 😆. You’ll be stuck with millet for a while as they get used to hands. Try offering treats in your flat palms first then from your fingers. As for other treats you can use: safflower seeds and chopped pumpkin seeds (only one of my tiels likes it tho). I’m still learning what else they will take as treats. I also put their seed mix in a tiny bowl like in the course once they were on pellets and veggies.

Thank you so much for this!!! This was AMAZINGLY helpful!! I struggle with my 7 year old wanting to "pet" the new cockatiels, and honestly I really may try Dave's solution, because I think it'll really hit home for her and be understandable on her level. While the techniques you show are the same (just adapted) as you would for larger bird, it was really helpful seeing it sized down a bit, and will help a lot with our tiels. Also, as the only treat they will come near so far is millet, it's good to know that it is possible to use it as a training treat! I just watched the whole video, and will probably watch it again as we progress! Thank you! Question- how often did you train Blueberry (how many times per day), and how long did each session typically last? We made the FIRST mistake you mentioned- got more than one at once (oh no!!!) So I want to have 1:1 time with each of them. Side note- I just did grocery shopping this afternoon, beans are soaking, and Winter-Spring recipe will be cooking tomorrow AM, woohoo!! Can't wait for my pellets to come in, hoping they make it to my house, I had a really bad DUH moment today and my phone autofilled some bogus address and genius me hit checkout without looking lol!!! You guys are AWESOME!
