Q&A with the whole fam!

I order off amazon honestly. And make sure to check out our BirdTricks Tuesday series on flight training, we talk about older birds in that series if you're new and missed it when it first released.

I would love an indoor flight course! I have a Timneh African Grey if that helps. But any content on older/rehomed birds is really great! We are still working on getting his foundations down and diet has been the most difficult thing to get him to change. Here’s a question though: where do you get the seeds/nuts you use as treats? My Timneh loves sunflower seeds in the shell but the ones for human consumption are always salted and I don’t think that’s good for him even as a treat. I usually dig the sunflower seeds out of the birdseed I feed the outdoor birds and use that for his treats and foraging.

Definitely think an indoor flight course would be great, no matter the species. I would guess cockatiel is one of the most commonly kept birds (and maybe use your macaws to model some things that would look different with a larger bird, i.e. flying through doors). Just a thought :)

With budgies I've only ever used millet as the reward, never been able to find a second or third reward although while in Oz we had one in a class take grass seed fresh from outside.

BirdTricks

Wow blueberry looooves a shower! What kind of temperature does he/she like? It’s winter here in Australia so the budgies are unwilling to bathe. They are scared of being on the bathroom and are only comfortable hanging out within line of sight of the cage. I am working on getting them used to the rest of the house by walking around with them on my hands while they eat millet. Is that the right approach? Also - do you have suggestions for a 2nd and 3rd best budgie food reward? Mine are mad keen for millet and nothing else. I use budgie seed mix for foraging, not meals, but not easy to use for training.

Great advice on showing the birds the window. I get mine next week and I was concerned about the windows. I have a home full of window.

Patricia Lynn

I'd also be interested in an indoor flight course!

Rangersyl

That's good to hear, I've been wondering what species the masses would find most relatable!

BirdTricks

Definitely! I’ve been able to teach Bandit the same things you taught Morgan and other big birds. I don’t think it would make a difference really.

Kait Hudnall

Oh my word!

BirdTricks

Just curious would you find it relatable if it was with a different species than the type you have?

BirdTricks

My birds live in outdoor aviaries and do fine without the 12 hours during the summer but if I saw behavioral issues I'd change it and give them the 12 hours. It's something that we encourage because most people live with their birds indoors where their bird is in the center of the commotion of the household and don't receive enough sleep. Hope this helps you evaluate your situation!

Thanks guys for all your insight! Hi Capri. Great job first time on Q&A.👍😊

Indoor flight course would be great! Our brand new 9yr old adopted GCC is an amazing flyer, he does these awesome crazy turns and landings! But only when he wants to, and only lands where he wants to- namely shoulder to shoulder. He’s scared of hands, stands, flat surfaces... he’s only happy on a shoulder or down a shirt 😂 oh, and he’s also scared of the clicker, target stick and hands. Oh and the evil standing fans. And pellets 😫

Jennifer Percopo

I would LOVE an Indoor flight course!! I’ve been working on my GCC’s flight skills and want to take them even further. He loves to fly!

Another great Q&A - I so appreciate your insights, including the different interpretations/nuances in advice from you and Dave....and now Capri! Thanks for offering this benefit to your patrons!!

Jen Perry

Thanks for all the great advice guys. Nice to have Capri join in.

8 month old Caique arrived Thursday. Easily converted to the seasonal feeding system. She was weaned onto Cheerios and Zupreem! Yuck. My question is about sleep. I know that she needs 12 hours of uninterrupted sleep in total darkness. I put her in the bathroom shower in a carrier. But we have a big aviary that she apparently likes. Can she sleep in there, too since she seems so comfortable in it? Because of the sunrise will she get her 12 hours in?
