An Update!

Only my Rocko and Morgan tier get this insider info and I'm excited to share it!

An Update!

Comments

That's a really cool idea. The problem with attaching anything to the porch is it's on a slope and those aviaries really have to be on level ground to go up easily/well. Plus last year I just spent a lot of money on all the cement tiles to make the floor of it where it is. Luckily I am getting a lot of use out of that aviary this year with Bean - he doesn't contact call with my flock and he's very quiet so the neighbors don't even know he's back there. He does beep sometimes but I'm sure they don't relate that to a bird noise lol! As for the quarantine area attachment, I would still be looking at uprooting the whole thing I put in last year which would be a beast. I think I'd be better off attaching something else than moving what is already working but I have thought of attaching my batting net to the side so I could flight train off of it that way. Lots of ideas!

BirdTricks

Could you attach your 15’ diameter aviary to the back of the screened in porch somehow, or to the back of the quarantine area? Then you wouldn’t ever have to take project birds in the open! That would be so cool! My husband and I were just talking about how to build a bird porch, I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Whitney Riley

LOL!

BirdTricks

Congrats Jamie. Sounds like a great plan! That means we won’t get to see Dave coming out of the shower shirtless though! Lol

Also, to Capri's point, I think having her do a small project bird is great. In addition to her being able to learn and grow as her own self, it'll also show owners of birds that your kids CAN and SHOULD be involved in their training. I agree about keeping it more private on Patreon, for her safety, is a good idea; it's always a little odd when people publicize their children, just because not all viewers are nice/well-intended people. Capri is a cutie, and she has picked up so much from watching you guys (more than I can appreciate); if she wants to start exercising it, I say support it! :)

I love all the ideas on this, too! I think it sounds perfect. Would you use metal screening, to ensure no one could chew through? I think it's a great way also, to give others ideas about how they can enrich their lives without doing major construction. Screening in an existing porch (securely!!!) is a cost effective way. I'm in the market to buy a home, and one of my requirements is a porch in which I could screen in. Per this video, I will definitely keep that as a high priority and make sure a large porch, to allow flight, would be included!

Sarah Wells

Home will be home again soon. Congrats y’all

I love all the ideas! I agree that having a water source/ mudroom/half bath would be really convenient for cleaning and taking care of the birds. Keep Capri on Patreon, much smaller and safer community.

As someone who used to own a 4wd and a boat etc - if you added a 2nd roller door that goes into the “studio”, it could be converted into an EPIC workshop when you are done (that some people would just die for!). Put alongside the other roller door and it will look nice, like a double lock up garage. If you don’t wish to use it you could just lock it and insulate it.

I like all of your ideas! As for Capri and her own project bird: Have a conversation about how involved she would like you to be. Ask her about how would she ask for your help if she thought she needed it. Ask her if you saw something that was needed how would she want you to tell her. Have a conversation about video recording and how does she see that happening with her project bird. I’d also have a conversation with her about the not so positive aspects of online environments and begin to talk about the challenges of living life online at a level she is comfortable with. I’m so excited for all of these new ideas for you, Dave, Capri, and the birds! Go gently with you all.

Also, hang a sisal rope net! The YouTube channel Flock Talk has an amazing bird room tour video which the room is for her parrotlet and conure so perfect size reference for Blueberry! I have a Pinterest board that has some bird room ideas as well: https://pin.it/nOzEKGi

New space for birds: COOL! Capri: That is so neat that she wants her own project bird. Prob. safer just on Patreon - we would all love to see her do her thing but would never criticize her. :) How can we pass along her love and respect for animals to all the other children in the world?!

Jennifer Perez

Wow, all of this sounds awesome. Looking forward to seeing progress on your studio. Good luck Capri choosing your "second" project bird. 😉💖

Kathy Surber

Thanks, Jamie. I hope I didn't bother you. When I pushed PLAY this morning it did indeed take me to the YouTube website. From now on I will only play in through Patreon (I have both the BirdTricks app and the Patreon app loaded on my phone). It occurs to me now that BirdTricks never saw my first comment as a new subscriber a month ago. The response, asking me for more information and considering me for Mr. Bean's forever home must have been received from them. They would not, of course, ever seen my response either & therefore wouldn't know who I was or what I was referring to. As long as I haven't bought the cage or stand yet I think I'll leave it alone. There are others who are far more qualified than I am. 🙂 Have a great afternoon. -John, Chicago

Usually if you push play it will play in this player on Patreon, but you also have the option to watch it through YouTube's player as well and comment via there. :)

BirdTricks

ATTENTION! There's a problem with the comments function. When I actually WATCH the video (pushing PLAY) it takes me to a different website and THEN plays the video. It's subtle but that's what it's doing. The problem is that when you FAVORITE the video there AND LEAVE A COMMENT it takes you to the SECOND SITE comments section, where there two comments (including mine) that DO NOT appear with the 18 others on the first website (the NOT PLAYED YET website comments!!). No wonder nobody's gotten back to me about the comments I leave. THEY NEVER SEE THEM. AArrggghh! 🙂

John E Rice

Aww. Yes to Capri & her project bird on Patreon. Perhaps in a check-in/weekly summary style? As for ideas on the porch, you can hang ropes from and across the ceiling or perches from your house wall. Hang up swings. AnimalWonders has these amazing huge wood ones for their macaws. I have seen people hang poles from the ceiling with perches attached.

Rosanna Lam

Yes to Capri's Project! No to YouTube. Yes on Patreon. I have a newly turned 5 year old daughter. That's what I would do. Love your future backyard porch and studio!

Leia Gibson

So many exciting things! I can't even imagine how exciting a studio would be. I just got my study in order and am still over the moon about that, and that was only a single afternoon of work. Seeing the building progress would be awesome too (I live that stuff). And then more project birds! Yay! I learn so much from those videos. It would be fantastic to see Capri work with a rescue, and the way kids do things can teach us all a lot. They tend to simplify things we adults complicate unnecessarily. Super excited for you!

Heather Wolf

Great ideas all around! Agree on not putting Capri's project on YouTube. Would love to see you work with a cockatiel.

Rangersyl

I would sound proof it too.

Patricia Lynn

I wish Texas had cooler weather.

Patricia Lynn

What we won’t do for our babies!

Patricia Lynn

Aww yay! So exciting!! What kind of screening material are you using? We're also interested in screening in our patio and aren't sure what's bird beak safe and such <3

MyHomeAquarium98

Fantastic plan. Hope the cost isn’t prohibited. My guess $25,000!! Project bird for Capri - great idea of hers. Lots of time and commitment from all of you. But so worth it. The right bird will present itself when everyone is ready. Thanks for sharing your excitement. I feel like part of the extended family. Victoria

Victoria Karpinski

I'm so excited for you! We are in the middle of a remodel so we can have a screened in porch and it can't happen fast enough!! I love the Capri idea but I'm with you I wouldn't expose her to you tube in that way yet! I have a parrotlet she can work with.😉 Although I think they would be harder then a cockatiel. A little green cheek conure would be a cute bird for her to work with also. Congrats on everything you are working on that's super exciting!!🎉🎈❤

Wendy Cottingham

Awesome! Just a costly thought. Maybe a mudroom/half bath for cage cleaning, water, and human potty breaks:)

corrine williams

So excited for Capri!! I agree about not putting it on YouTube, people are cruel and would hate for some low life to make her feel crappy. But would obviously love to see it on Patreon! ❤️ I think a cockatiel would be pretty ideal for a first project bird. It was my first rescue bird and they are just amazing and so full of love, and I think it would really set her up for success. A male lovebird, or a parrotlet could also be a good choice. Excited to see your finished porch, been wanting to do something similar with mine!

Gabby Klinge

It is great to see you all jazzed up about this. It will be fun to watch the projects come together. Regarding Capri - don't worry so much about us. This first project bird is all about her. And it should all be positive learning. There is no need to let those negative comments (that will inevitably come in today's environment) rain on Capri's parade. I am just thrilled that she is continuing the family tradition!!

Jen Perry

I'm so excited for your "garage"! I think Capri having her own project bird would be awesome but I agree to NOT put it on youtube because people are terrible.

Zaira Lupidi

Omg! I love this idea. My so who “hates” all my animals has been talking about screening in our front porch for the birds!
