The wait is over! (Episode 1 with Sunny!)

Sunny is Dave's first project bird ever. He is considered a "worst case" based on his background of being in a hoarding situation for over 20 years. He came to the rescue with scissor beak and so his beak will be something we will have to keep a consistent eye on. He also had NO PERCHES whatsoever in his original enclosure and seems to have a harder time getting around. Although Sunny's progress is going to be slower than what you're all used to seeing, we hope it relates to those who have a similar pace.

Note: This is pre-release content that will be public on our YouTube channel at a much later date. Behind the scenes of the HOW we did what we did with Sunny will be available to the Rocko tier and above. THANK YOU all for supporting project birds like Sunny through joining us here on Patreon!

OMG! Such a heart warming story!! Thank you for doing this for Sunny. He seems so gentle and afraid. I know hoarding is a mental illness but the person that did this should have some consequences. I’m looking forward to seeing his progress. Good luck, Dave, trying not to fall in love with him and keep him😝

Connie Muttart

I bawled like a baby this entire video! What a sweet sweet lovely bird. Dave you are awesome and I am so happy for Sunny. What a precious story.

Nancie Rogers

You guys are amazing the love and understanding you give these magnificent creatures is so beautiful and is educating us all. It’s really beautiful to watch these birds with no hope transform into a loving companion with hope and you see the happiness on their faces, I live for that!! 💜💜

Lee-Ann Sharp

I love how gentle Sunny is! You are wonderful with him...❤️

Kyila Sninsky

OMG to see how much he progressed in just wanting to be with you! Great job! loving having access to all of these videos!

I’m Thankful for rescues like Ronie’s and avian vets. Sunny looks so much better already. The fact that he was deemed un-adoptable just a short time ago to where he is today is nearly hard to believe. Dave, from what I’ve seen so far, you got this. Just amazing. I enjoy learning with every vid y’all produce. Thanks y’all

Tempie Elder

The first photo was taken in his original hoarding situation I believe or was taken when he was first transferred to the rescue so super early on. Ronie's had him for 3-4 months before we got him and was able to get him tons of initial vet care, change his diet to Roudybush pellets and get him the proper perching and things he needed so they had a huge impact on him. They also realized the bird he was with was not his buddy but was actually causing harm to Sunny so they ended up separating them before we took Sunny and said that made a world of difference as well. So I think they deserve a lot of credit! When we got him he still had a lot of patches and spots (his legs are bare and under his wings is pretty bare too) plus his flight feathers are having a hard time coming in without breaking since there's only one here or there and no others around it to protect it. Sunny is great about playing with toys here and we try to keep him from displaying anxious behavior that may lead to more feather destruction. Bathing is a huge thing with that which you will see this month in my Sunnyside series of trying to work on that. I'm also using special calming sprays with him that I may be releasing to patrons at some point to test out with feather mutilated birds but I'm still in the testing period with them right now. Hope this answers your questions!

BirdTricks

The first photo that I saw of Sunny there was a lot of self mutilation. The feathers were nearly gone. Now, they look much better. How long did it take to regrow his feathers to this point.? Was there anything special done that helped his feathers grow in? Since he lived in such a horrific situation with no toys, perches, etc., are they growing in because he now has the proper nutrition and foraging toys?

Tempie Elder

Definitely keep Sunny in mind when his rehab is done!

I would have adopted Sunny. My blue & gold that I adopted from Ronie's was a project, but she was always aggressive too. She was much better with strangers this last year, but unfortunately she passed away a month ago. I have a soft spot for tough birds. 💙💛

Melissa MacPherson

I am already in love with Sunny. Can’t wait to see his story!

Sheila Diller

Absolutely amazing Dave, so inspirational! Can't wait to see more of the journey!!! (just a tiny editing comment, the spinning image to change scene made me feel a bit queezy... could just be me though)

Nicole van der Burg

I am definitely not crying -- you're crying! So touching to watch an animal trust once he realizes he is in a safe environment. But especially a bird - it's a whole other level of surrender. ❤❤❤

Jen Perry

Oh gosh. I am NOT crying. You are crying.

Bashi Kumar-Hazard

Dang. I cried too.

Jennifer Perez

OMG! You can see how he learned to trust you in the 1st day. Sunny is so lucky to have been found by you. This made me literally cry tears of joy. 😂 I can't wait to see more of Sunny's amazing journey with you. 💖

Kathy Surber

Sunny’s body language reminds me of Chauko’s body language just a year ago, he was sick and had to finally let me get him out of his 20+ years old hot box. I can’t wait to see what Sunny has to show us, what his actual personality, see him play and interact.

Guy Goldstein K

O.m.g my heart melted!

Stephanie Gettel

I have gone through so many emotions watching this video. Being that I just brought my new bird home yesterday, you answered so many questions for me too. You have the biggest heart. Sunny is such a gentle soul even though humans have failed him for so long. He is truly going to live up to his name.

Patricia Lynn

Thanks for all the truly unbelievable feedback everyone! The next video is in the hopper soon-ish: editing now...I take a while to edit, sorry!

Dave Womach

Sunny seems so sweet! So thankful he was rescued and now will get the love he deserves. ❤️🦜

Shelah Moore

You guys are the greatest!! I'm so happy that I found out about you guys even though I don't have any birds!!!! Can't wait for the next journey him.

Laura J Wilcox

That feather!!! My heart! He is SO unbelievably gentle. Dave, you have him practically LICKING the target! What a great job! I'm not crying you're crying. 😭😭😭😭😭😭💙💚💛

Leia Gibson

Oh, man. This is a dehydrating video! (Cried a lot. Like everyone else.) Good luck, Dave and Sunny! Thank you for doing what you do.

JESSICA R SULLIVAN

Dave, THAT is why I support you and your beautiful family. 54 year old men who were raised in a different era don't cry. Ever. Well guess what Dave? When I saw Sunny very slowly, very cautiously raise his foot I saw one of God's creatures that was on the very brink of losing hope forever slowly becoming willing to at least entertain the idea that he was worthy of being loved. The cruelest part of all of this is that Sunny probably believes he did something bad to deserve to become unlovable. For you to intervene in that fate and begin to show him that he should EXPECT to be loved in such a short period of time is beyond astonishing, and the perfect example of why I am honored to be able to support you and Jamie in your continuing work. John, Chicago P.S.> Your use of "The Five Love Languages" by Gary Chapman is brilliant! Definitely one of the best books I've ever read! John

John E Rice

YAY! I love this, too. Sunny seems like a bird that deserves a great home, but he has been ill equipped to show his love back. I'm echoing the others that have commented, but I truly believe that he is soooo fortunate to have your care and training capabilities. He's a lucky guy, and he'll find a terrific home after this. I can't wait to see more.

Sarah Wells

Thank you for doing this Dave. I also have a 20 something year old B&G from a hoarding/rescue situation. I have had him 2 years now and he has done so well...thanks to you and Jamie for your support. I am so excited to watch Sunny’s progress, especially getting him to fly. He is so gentle!

Andrea Kelsall

He looks like such a gentle giant!! What a sweetheart... that poor thing, I’m so happy you guys have him, he deserves a real shot and some real love ❤️ side note- FLIGHT SUIT?!?!? HELL YEAH!!!!!!

Jennifer Percopo

Oh my heart!!! Definitely worth the wait, and so looking forward to the next episode. I'm so happy all the bad stuff is behind Sunny now, and he is going to have a wonderful life.

Heather Wolf

Aww I'm not crying, you're crying!! Oh I can't wait to see his continued story!!

MyHomeAquarium98

What a gentle soul. Great work Dave! You and Sunny look like a good match, I can’t wait for the next episode!

Evita Westwood

I hate that there’s a need for “project birds.” However, these that we see are a lucky few that get to have their lives transformed by you guys. Kind of like from rags to riches or hitting the birdie lottery. You guys are just awesome. I’m fairly new here on Patreon. I was rescued by Touché and Lefty 😍. And you Capri 😉. Anyway my comment after all that is Thank you for all you do but also for taking me along for the ride uh the flight 🦜🦅. I feel like I’m right there with you as I watch your videos. Can not wait to soar like parrots with you Sunny and Bean annnd Capri’s project bird. P.S. Way to go Sunny. 🤩

Sherry mathes

I love these project bird videos! You guys are amazing at what you do. Because of your training materials and feeding system, I have started fostering and working with birds, with great success! Thank you thank you thank you! 💜
