Week 1 with Bean!

Fantastic breakthroughs! I'm surprised he was the one that wanted to go outside so badly, and you don't even have to slowly introduce it. Definitely awesome 👍

Lia

Love it!!

Heather J Stevenson

Loved it! Great job Jamie and Capri!

Shelah Moore

Maybe! Comet has a bit more spice to it than the mild blueberry of Bubba's.

BirdTricks

Thank you! I wonder if the flavor of the bread would make a difference. I will try the blueberry next and see. I also wanted to tell you when I brought the caique home I was told he would not touch veggies he only ate fruit but I just offered the seasonal feeding system with a touch of unsweetened applesauce after a 3 days I took away the applesauce. He loves it now! I had a few raspberries that I thought I would give him for a treat and he ate the veggies first!!! I'm glad I took your lead and didn't take the previous owners word for what he 'wouldn't' eat!!

I'd recommend adding his old pellets crushed up so that it isn't so overwhelmingly our pellets only in the flavor. You can also add crushed nuts and sprinkle fav seeds on top while it's hot so that they are interested in the initial introduction. Most birds just go nuts for the texture of the bread and that sparks their interest enough, like for Bean. I did not add anything special to mine, he took to the original recipe just fine.

Not yet and omg thank goodness he hasn't done that yet! Haha

I will say if Bondi does it to me, she steps up first and then gets head scratches. If I didn't do it that way, she would refuse to step up and avoid it by just constantly putting her head down. But Bean isn't like that and I remember seeing a lion trainer that gave the reward before the behavior was asked and being floored about it but in some cases - I do think it works better. In others I think it conditions bad habits... cause... cockatoos.

Thanks!

He seems like such a happy boy. this is remarkable.

Patricia Lynn

So much progress. He seems much more confident. He loves that bread you make. Do you sell it prepackaged by any chance? Just thought I’d try it! For certain your African Grey’s love it!

Linton Hutcheson

Wow!! Some great strides made in one week. That's awesome. May have to order some birdie bread for my Grey. :-)

Melanie Simpson

What are the chances you have two cuddly greys under your roof?! 😆 Has Dave been able to pet Bean yet? Let’s hope Bean doesn’t learn to make Cressi’s glop despite their mutual love of food. 😂

Rosanna Lam

The beak wipe fail was hilarious!

Nicole van der Burg

I want birdie bread! :)

Linda Chapman

He really is the sweetest little thing.

Jade

I am curious what you add to your birdie bread. I'm trying to get my caique switched over to pellets but he isn't really liking it. I added some corn to my last batch so that maybe it would get him to pick at it. I was just curious if you added something besides the applesauce??

Wendy Cottingham

This is so educational. I realized yesterday that I have not been paying attention to Fred's body lanuage as well as I did a few weeks ago. I've been down with a severe allergy related illness for several weeks (not COVID thankfully). So I haven't been able to work with or spend much time with my Goffin's Cockatoo and he is letting me know that he's not liking me much right now. I can't believe how lousy I was at reading him. He was telling me "I don't want you to touch me" and "I'm upset with you". But I just treated him like I always did. Went right in to head scratches and a little preening (he's got LOT's of pin feathers), but every time he would turn his head with beak open and try to nip my hand. I wasn't getting it 'till yesterday. Your video with Bean really drove home that point, and so much more. I can be a bit dense at times so I will be re-watching this and your Family Friendly Formula's again. And again.... =0 ) Thank heaven you are here. You and Dave are both such a wonderful gift. Hope you both stay safe and healthy.

Your comment about letting the bird decide what is reinforcement/punishment is so true and it's something, even though you and I have talked about it so much on consults, I have to be SUPER aware of still. With Tango he has his play room, and in the mornings I typically clean his room from the day before, rearrange/resupply toys, and then I make his breakfast and put him in there with breakfast. He doesn't complain about going in there even tho he knows, most days, that's where he'll be most of the day because I work. So a couple months ago when COVID started, I started feeling bad for still putting him in there when I was home more and changed up my routine so that I would clean and put breakfast in there but then I would take him out to hang out with me before putting him in there - spending time together!! Yeah...no....100% THAT was punishment to him since he WANTED to go in his room (he enjoys his room) and me keeping him with me was actually hurting more than helping. I caught it quickly, thank goodness, and altered it so I was spending time with him more in the middle of the day which he was more excited over (he really likes when we do training sessions in his room). But it's all about seeing it through their eyes, not ours <3 Thanks for all your lessons and continued teaching!!!

So cool watching Bean settle in and calm down from the nervous, shaking bird that arrived just one week ago. I know you mentioned in another Bean video that you are ok with his head scratch diversion from a requested step up because you are working to build a language with Bean. And his step ups are definitely getting much better. Is this a behavior you are concerned about perpetuating? I ask this because my CAG does this exact behavior when he doesn't want to change locations OR until I get a high-value treat to reward him for stepping up. Just curious if this is "normal" acceptable behavior in permission-based training or if I should be working with him to get a consistent step-up every time I ask for it. (FYI - he's 11 years old and been with me since April.)

Jen Perry

It's amazing how comfortable he's gotten in just 1 week, and how much trust you've gained in such a short amount of time.
