That's awesome! Thanks for this! I'll have a question for you next month!

Fabfemme

Thank you so much for the info, I really appreciate it ❤️

Blueberry still trains great for spray millet when he gets my home made seed mix, so if I can't train with him then he gets the seed mix at some point. Sometimes I give my seasonal feeding on its own, and once he's done I offer more of it again mixed with the seed mix. Sometimes I offer the seed mix with the pellet mix I have in the evenings or mid day. Sometimes I am in a rush and do just the seed mix or just the pellet mix. Since he's still technically in diet conversion for pellets I do a little of everything so he doesn't learn to "hold out" for anything based on a routine. Most of the time though, he buzzes my head over and over to remind me to give him something lol. Ideally I'd love if he could have pellets in the evening and the seasonal feeding in the morning with the seed mix being if I can't train with him. Budgies need seed in their diet, it's just about how you give it. If it's always from a bowl for nothing then they won't be responsive to training - whereas if he initiates interaction then I do a quick session and then serve him and it works great because he learns to come communicate to me vs always coming to expect full food bowls everywhere. Hope that answers you (I am not a routine person lol can you tell?)

Lol Kids. So the plan will be chop in the morning and pellets for supper and millet for training, and no other seed for Blueberry?

Krystal Satchell

Oh man, miss Capri has sabotaged my diet conversion with him SO. MANY. TIMES. so Blue is currently not eating pellets exclusively, I have them mixed in the seed mix (as a separate mix) that I give in the evenings.

BirdTricks

That sounds just like a budgie to me lmao!

Something else I was wondering, you spoke about how you taught him how to eat chop and wrapping the seeds in the sweet potato, but I was wondering if he is eating your pellet for supper or is he having your health seed recipe?

Krystal Satchell

Thanks Jamie for the reply. I don't know that I'd say he's wild...more restless...he doesn't sit still. I was able to target train him and teach him the spin and the kiss but he's everywhere, I can't keep him still on the T stand without flying off. Kind of like Blueberry on the table with millet all over, hard to keep his attention, he flies off then comes back then away again. Short attention span..lol, I'm thinking partly to do with his age.

Beans whistle in the toy - appropriate use of discussion was hilarious! Who says the don’t understand!!

We don't know how old he was, no. We sort of assumed maybe 6 months? But we didn't get any info on his hatch date. If he wasn't clipped I would have started in a MUCH smaller space (vs my whole house being fair game) like a bathroom or small bedroom. If he was too panicky altogether I'd likely work within a cage if necessary. It would really depend on how flighty/wild he was acting, but I would have likely tried for a few days in a smaller room and if there was progress, continued that way. If there wasn't, I'd have switched it up. I'm surprised to hear your budgie at only 8 weeks is acting so wild but I'd recommend all meals come from you - even if it's out of a dish from your hand. That way yours starts to associate you with meals and can come tell you when he's ready for one! Blueberry comes and finds me around the house to let me know he's ready for a session and/or meal.

I have questions regarding the budgie course. Do you know how old Blueberry was when you got him? Also, just wondering if you can provide info on how you would have trained him differently had he not been clipped? I got a budgie at about 8 weeks old fully flighted and complete opposite as Blueberry. He is all over the place and I can barely keep him still enough to target. He picked up targeting quickly but as he is flighted he flies off or flies into the target or on my head, or anywhere else. I would love ore info on if you get an untamed flighted budgie. Thank you!

Thanks for asking and answering that, Dena and MyHomeAquarium! I was wondering myself.

You have to be a Morgan tier to ask the questions :)
