Bean's TERRIFIED of men... (including Dave)

We've got our work cut out for us on this issue.

Bean's TERRIFIED of men... (including Dave)

Comments

We ordered a bunch of those perches in a few different sizes, they’re great! I love how they’re differently shaped to be good on the feet, and they’re surprisingly easy to clean! I was worried scrubbing would take of the “sand” but it didn’t, so huge plus!

Jennifer Percopo

This is exactly what you show in your Family Friendly Parrot Formula when describing the training quadrant, and I've used it with my GCC when she's shown fear toward an object new to her. It definitely works, and within a really short period of time, she loses her fear of whatever it is. Right now I can't think of anything she's afraid of outside of sudden, loud noises. Her nickname is Death Wish.

Heather Wolf

Wow, I just watched this and my mind is blown away.... I never thought backing away can be a "reward" in scenarios when the bird is too afraid. I will definetely try this in the coming weeks. So often I have the dilemma of "I want to reward my birds when being confident by giving them a treat, but giving them the treat would scare them". Thank you for the helpful video! ❤

FlyingCookie

We definitely see man-phobias the most because many men have this mentality of not being told no by the bird, so they end up forcing a lot of behaviors they want upon the birds. We probably see that most commonly. Men also tend to just "go for it" as well without spending time with a slow approach to read the animal's reaction.

BirdTricks

Maybe!

BirdTricks

So cool!

BirdTricks

Thanks for sharing this. So Dave has to be a training prop for all the birds with man-phobias! Out of interest, is there birds that are afraid of women? Or is mainly men because of their size, voice tone or that they handle birds slightly differently? I could understand birds being afraid of kids too due to their more erratic movements and high volume of voice. Which people phobias are most common and which people preferences are most common and why? (Sorry... that is a lot of questions!!).

Great demo video. Can’t wait to see more videos of Bean’s progress

Jan. W

This is really helpful to see. I think I just assumed that Bean was ok around him; I hope you keep posting videos of this progress, I would love to see how he goes from the power pause to actual interaction. Maybe a reason he is keeping his back to Dave is to keep you in sight? Ie if he has to flee he knows where his safe person is?

Jennifer Percopo

Aw thanks so much!

BirdTricks

Yes! That is one thing that makes it different for me as well. Most birds don't want to turn their back on what makes them nervous/fearful but it almost seems like Bean is more comfortable looking in the direction he is likely to flee in!

BirdTricks

Great video demonstrating the power pause! I am kind of surprised that Bean was comfortable keeping his back to Dave as the source of his fear. When I'm trying to desensitize my birds to scary objects they stare at them sometimes like deer-in-headlights and won't let me turn them around (presumably) out of fear they'll get attacked by truly terrifying things like sunglasses, balloons, or rolled-up placements...

Lauren Holder

Great demo video. Love the term "F U feathers" :) Outdoor pets work better for me so just have hummingbirds outside. I've used similar techniques to get them more comfortable with me being around. I've got two of them to the point I can walk up to the window when they are 2-3 feet away on a branch, open the 1/2 closed blinds, open the window all the way then turn the fan on. They'll just sit there watching me, sometimes even preening between looks.

Chris Mallabon

Thank you so much!!! I did not know you guys had an Amazon store. Hope the purchase helps you guys out :) I am so incredibly happy that I found you guys. We have a great relationship with our bird, thanks to all the wonderful information I've gotten from you guys.

Jennifer Hambleton

You can find them in my must have's: https://www.amazon.com/shop/birdtricks?listId=WWZF4DP84QK8 the one with the blue and gold macaw on the blue one is one of them, the green one after that is like that, and the brown towards the top is like that. The first green one is not, that one is complete cement all around.

BirdTricks

That's a great idea. Would you happen to have the name of the ones that are smooth on top?

Jennifer Hambleton

I have made a more in depth video on this coming a bit later in Bean's journey :) hopefully it fills in some of the gaps in body language.

BirdTricks

It was my bad, I forgot to list Patreon as an approved host for the video from Vimeo but if people clicked to watch from Vimeo it was working...

BirdTricks

Try now

BirdTricks

I'm glad!

BirdTricks

Should work now!

BirdTricks

Working now! :)

BirdTricks

Should be working now :) sorry about that!

BirdTricks

They are calcium perches. You can always put a nail filing perch in a travel carrier and go for a drive! I know a lot of people who do that for getting the nails down without a vet appointment. I use some lightweight sandy ones that are smooth on top and only sandy where the nails rest. They work great.

BirdTricks

I was told he was only good for Laura. I've found he's not keen on men in general but I think if consistently worked on he would stop being nervous about them for sure. He has had no issue with Capri.

BirdTricks

Hard to say because a rep takes longer when "waiting" for certain behavior but I would definitely limit to how OFTEN you do this type of training because it is pushing them so much mentally/emotionally. So this is not an every day thing.

BirdTricks

I can not even tell the difference between content feathers or stressed feathers. 🤦‍♀️ this shows an incredible amount of patience required to learn “bird”.

Nancie Rogers

awesome and very informative video! Loved it!!

eugenia mitova

I wish we knew this technique with the timid adopted cockatiel we used to have. He eventually grew ridiculously tame and loving with us, but the road to get there was a lot harder than it needed to be. He passed away at 29 years old. We miss him.

Holden Kendrick

Thanks so much for showing this!

Fabfemme

I was wondering about the perches that you have in the cage, the ones that look like cholla wood. Are those sanded or calcium perches? I have an Indian Ringneck and we are making real progress but, at the moment, in order to get his nails trimmed I would have to get him in the cage (which he is terrified of right now....we are working on this) and I am afraid the trip to the vets to be held down and have his nails clipped would undo the progress that we have made so far. I've thought about the sanded perches but worry that they may hurt his feet and do more harm than good. (He does and would have other perches in the cage so it would not be the only thing he had)

Jennifer Hambleton

He's so different! Such a sweet, expressive little face, as soon as Dave moves away it's almost like a smile. I'm going to try this with the vacuum, which is a big stressor for one of my girls.

JESSICA R SULLIVAN

Wow, that was so awesome! Great video to show subtle cues for sure. Awesome teaching video. I'm going to watch this many more times to get better at those very subtle cues. Plus I didn't realize bean was so scared of Dave, is it just Dave or were you told he had a thing with men? Because if I remember he seems ok with Capri more so, correct? That actually reminds me when my tiels were young they didn't like close contact and someoned grand daughter came over and they literally followed her around and took millet from her. I think it was a size thing.

Jodi

I'll try this again... sorry auto-correct got me the first time! lol Do you recommend keeping these sessions around the same 5-7 minute time frame? I'm sure it would be easy for us humans to over-do and push too far too fast.

Teresa Kernodle

Would it be possible to talk through what specific things Bean is doing to be calm? I have bad eyes and I can’t tell. Some of his behaviors seem quite subtle. I also couldn’t tell when you mentioned his feathers were streamlined. Thank you.

Beckie Child

It’s working now! Thanks!

Wendy LeBlanc

Confirmed, it seems to be fixed now.

Trede Dreyowolfe

Sorry guys!!! It should play now. Let me know if anyone is still experiencing issues. I may need resort back to using YouTube for hosting vs Vimeo because I seem to always mess Vimeo up!

BirdTricks

Hmm, that is quite odd! Is anyone else receiving this message when they are trying to watch the video? "Sorry, Because of its privacy settings, this video cannot be played here."

Maggie Mitten

I still can’t see this content

MICHELLE HARIHARAN

Still can’t view

Wendy LeBlanc

same issue here too

Ace Ash Ventura

This was fascinating - the absolute subtlety in the changes in Bean between fear and calm. This is one of those videos that I will refer back to again and again. Thank you so much for sharing!

Jen Perry

It played for me so perhaps it is fixed.

Jen Perry

So, what probably happened is they made this video a day/week ago and scheduled its release. Before release, it would be set to private, and someone would need to flip a virtual switch to allow anyone other than the owner to view it. It'll be fixed soon, this happens occasionally. 😊 Edit: It's something else, because if you open it on mobile it takes you straight to the video on vimeo

Trede Dreyowolfe

Same here.....Dave is screening us out! Lol

Linton Hutcheson

Pretty sure we’re all having the same issue

Nicole Wehrman

same issue

Teresa Kernodle

I got "Because of its privacy settings, this video cannot be played here."

Trede Dreyowolfe

Won’t play 😢
