Tasty Tuesday (A batch and a half!)

Normally I double my recipe in my cookbook for my seasonal feeding system... sometimes even triple (whoaaaaa) but this time the store only had enough for me to do a normal batch... and a half. So that's what I did. Also, I realize the timing difference but this was my summer batch for the summer and that's why you see all those beets!

I'd love to see how much your batches make! I'm feeding a lot of beaks so each bag gives me about 3 days tops feeding my birds.

I also have. GCC and only prepare half a batch. What I didn’t know to do was to go ahead and mAke the next season’s batch and throw away the leftovers. So many great answer to many questions. Thank you

I make about half a batch for my GCC, and will have several leftover packages by the time I need to make the next season's batch. If you don’t have a food processor, they are worth their weight in gold when it comes to making chop; it makes the whole process so much easier and faster. My parrot eats ALL of her chop now, instead of picking through it like she used to do when I was hand chopping everything. Also, a vacuum sealer has been such a good investment - we use it for her pellets too, and all kinds of other food storage needs (like grab-n-go single serving dinner leftovers for lunches). I use 4x6 inch vacuum sealer bags for approximately 3 days worth of chop, which is about 60 g for my bird. These little bags make it easy to bring them along when we travel as well. I cook some of the grains, and leave some of them uncooked, which helps with moisture absorption.

We make double and donate to the local bird rescue. We don’t have tons of money, but they said this chop helps really well. They say they’ll meet us halfway from now on, and so we’re going to make even more. They also know you and were so excited when I said it was your feeding system. You visited them and did a fundraiser show once. (LARRS). We’re going to share pellets too, since we only have one bird. To keep ours fresh, we’ll give them what we think we won’t eat. Hugs to you all at BT. ~ShelB Added packing tip: we pack in snack bags without air. They look like burritos. Then we fit those in QT freezer bags. Then those go in gal. Freezer bags. Air is the enemy. Anyway, the big gallons are in a cold freezer downstairs. One qt at a time upstairs in kitchen, and one snack bag at a time in the fridge lasts 3 days. I pack it like this for the rescue too and they said it’s just wonderful this way.

Hahaha, darn beets! You can always sub golden beets too!

I vacuum seal mine in individual portions. Right now 1/4 of my freezer is bird food because I just made my fall to winter batch. My summer batch I froze in 3 day portions, but I let the veggies sit in my fridge too long before preparing and some bags didn’t stay fresh for the 3 days. I also didn’t read the part about draining the beets, so everything was a nice magenta color 🤣

lol!

My BH Pionus is a bean freak too! Edamame and Chickpeas are his faves but anything in the legume family will do. Have you tried giving yours whole bean pods like snap peas or steamed edamame? Mine loves to shell edamame. It's not an everyday food, but fun for a treat.

I freeze mine in snack sized baggies since I just have one bird and that’s still too much. By the last day it smells bad and I end up throwing some out. I might try ice cube trays next time.

Tree is loaded. Bubba got his first taste yesterday and loved it. I live in San Diego (north county) and would love to meet other bird people

Helen

Raw. Always raw. That way I’m not losing nutritional value.

Really good tips, I have just one Green Cheek Conure and everytime I have tried to Batch prepare and freeze, it ends up a soggy mess and he does not eat it.. so I prepare a small tub of fresh veg every third day...

Tara Dalton

I break it up too! I find it easier to break it the night before and leave it in the fridge overnight, it usually will be thawed by next morning.

Thats a lot!!

Pomegranates are my #1 favorite fruit of all time!!! You have a tree?! 🤩 Can I come camp out in your back yard?! Just kidding, but seriously, wow. I would possibly sell one of my kids (not my birds tho 😂) for a tree in my back yard! Fall is my favorite time of year because they FINALLY show up at the store! What kind of climate do they grow? It’s good to know they’re bird safe, MAYBE I’ll consider sharing... 😜

We’re making our fall to winter blend tomorrow! :)

I only have one Senegal parrot and I do half the recipe. It lasts me about three months, I think? He gets about an ice cube portion a day. He always starts with the beans and pasta, haha.

Are you cooking any of the vegetables (pepper, cauliflower, green beans) or just chopping them up raw?

Laura

I didn't strain the moisture enough from my last batch before I froze it. Fortunately it wasn't a disaster. My bags are not very full because I only have 1 pionus. It was kind of a soggy mess when I tried to thaw out a whole baggie. Then I discovered that I could break off a chunk and thaw it out in a strainer under cold running water then press it dry. So I just do that every morning. It only takes a second. Maybe I lose some vegetable juices, but I probably would have lost them by straining anyway. BTW I noticed your food processor. I just bought one that has a small motor that fits on top of a stainless bowl. It chops up veggies perfectly for chop, and isn't such a pain to wash and store. This is the one I bought, but there are many other models. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08B7YH8XX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I’ve reduced the variety and make a batch once a month. Add things like mung bean sprouts and flax seed, red peppers and whatever when I build out the dish. My galah loves it and my two parakeets and still learning, I’ve got pomegranates on the tree that need picking. Bubba got his own pumpkin and loved the seeds. it’s so entertaining to introduce new foods to these “kids”

Helen

Pretty sure my summer batch is gonna last through the winter. 😅 I got two small beaks, cockatiel and parrotlet. Maybe I’ll do half the recommended portions next time... I got a three tier sprouter (from biosta) so I would love to add more sprouts next time! I find the tiny sprouts like alfalfa don’t thaw well though (get brown). Currently adding fresh sprouts I grew myself to their current mix. Admittedly my cockatiel has backtracked on eating her veggies so more like feeding just one...,. 😬 P.S : Did Dave pick the music this time? 🤣
