2022-10-28 18:48:48 +0000 UTCThis is tied with another couple of parts for my favorite arc in the show so far (so far meaning up through the end of season 3). It's a sudden but really welcome change of pace, gives us a lot of valuable character and worldbuilding info, and introduces and continues to develop a few extremely important characters. I think the story of the Dark Era arc being told pretty mostly from Oda's point of view is also really interesting. He's an excellent lens for the arc considering how well his personality suits its tone, and also he's just a fantastic character and a complete badass. I'm not gonna too much into what's going on with Mori and Elise (she's the only one who calls him Rintarou as far as I know; IRL, Mori Rintarou was his real name and Mori Ogai was his pen name, so it implies she might be the only person here who even knows he HAS a different given name than the one he goes by) except that it's a lot weirder than anything you'd probably expect, and I'm pretty confident it's NOT... uh... the deeply concerning thing it looks like it is, both for in-universe reasons and due to things I know about Mori Ogai/Rintarou as an author. It's also worth noting that this is a flashback from 4 years ago, but Elise doesn't look even the slightest bit younger in it. Dammit, there's so little to talk about with this episode because other than highlighting a few details, it feels like a landmine full of spoilers. So hyped to see you getting into S2 though and I'm glad you're still really enjoying the show, the instant you started it I was pretty confident you'd be into it, but it's always nice to be right. The other things I can think of are probably not super important but more in the fun facts category. The photo of Dazai, Oda, and Ango is based on a real photo of the three of them at that same bar, which is a real bar that still exists, and if you're in Japan and go there I've heard you can get the very specific drink they had if you mention the manga/show/etc (I don't know if the part about the drink is true or not, but the bar exists and those three people did go there in real life). The historical authors were actually friends and the real version of that photo can be found on Wikipedia IIRC and I'm sure in many other places. So that's a detail I really like. The other thing is that if you pay close attention/know to look for it, the cat Dazai called "Sensei" (high key one of the best cat names IMO) actually shows up in many places. I can't remember for sure if he showed up in season 1 at all, but I think he probably did, and either way, keep an eye out and you'll notice him all over the place in this arc, in the present again later in season 2, and even beyond season 2. I like keeping an eye out for him as kind of an easter egg.
