Personally I think the manga did it better, but that might just be cause it looks creepier in black and white. They absolutely nailed the firing squad scene though. That feeling of anticipation in the train, followed by the creepy music as guns get pulled on the entire 4th. And that ending, second favorite for me after the Maximum the Hormone ending, at least musically.
