"Revelations" REACTION - Buffy 3x7 Commentary (Early Access YouTube)

Oh no worries! Sorry if I came across defensive, not my intent ๐Ÿ˜… and tbh the SA hints are something that hadn't super clicked, so I'll look out for that going forward :) thank you for the kind words by the way ๐Ÿ’™

Tyler Alexander

I suppose I should have said "So many OTHER reactors", because you have perceptively picked up on so many things it took me multiple re-watches to see. Your reactions have certainly been my top favorite on YT. You're doing absolutely great, I just wanted to bring up that specific aspect of Faith's backstory, because it isn't shown in any capacity other than read between the lines. Yet it influences so much of what you'll see of Faith going forward. It's like that final piece of the puzzle that clicks in and makes it all come together. (Also you're the only other reactor that has been as critical of Willow's treatment of Faith as I am in this season so its been a guilty pleasure) Glad you're enjoying the show so far, and wish you many more days of enjoyment!

Anthony Ravenwood

All I'll say on this for the moment is bear with me ๐Ÿ˜… at this stage I feel as if Faith has barely been in the show and I've been patiently waiting to see more of her, or at least have her more of a focus in more episodes, as that would give me more avenues to talk more about her. Sometimes with my style of content I have to pick and choose what I talk about or the video loses focus, so nowadays I pick and choose based on what's most relevant to the individual episode. I remember on her very first episode I noticed her grabbing the food at the dinner table and how it indicated that she was 'filling up' because she was likely hungry and what that might mean. This later was confirmed with her living arrangements. Faith has been a character I don't really consider myself to have scratched the surface of yet, and that's largely on purpose because there are just greater focuses right now. At the same time, I can see how much is under the surface with her and I'm actively looking for opportunities to do that. I haven't rushed into it because I'm confident those moments will come in the future.

Tyler Alexander

I know you're probably much further ahead by now, but I wanted to add to what others have been saying about Faith's backstory. Due to the limitations on what subject matter could be shown/discussed on network TV, some glaring subtext of Faith's life could only be hinted at. Which is the subject of S.Assault. (They only got it through with Xander because at that time most wouldn't even consider woman on man assault as such). It is as strongly hinted at as they could get away with, that Faith was molested and s. assaulted growing up. Depending on the canon, it was either by her Father or her Drunk Mother's boyfriends that came around. In the very first episode of Faith's appearance we are shown she is hypersexual to the point of making everyone uncomfortable. Add to that, the scene where she is mentally lost in pounding a vampire into a bloody pulp while screaming "You can't touch me", and you have two of the most predominant symptoms of someone who was abused in such a manner. So many reactors don't pick up on these two examples, even the ones who claim to be very mindful of mental health. (While not so obvious, and is only speculation, is whether Kakistos s. assaulted Faith's watcher while killing her. By Faith's complete breakdown in fear, one could argue that would be one of the reasons it affected her so badly. However this is only a guess.) In the coming episodes some question why Faith is so reckless and irreverent, and at the top of that list is because her life up to this point has been so terrible that she doesn't care whether she lives or dies. None of this is to excuse her actions, but to simply provide information that the showrunners really couldn't really express on a network teen show in the 90's.

Anthony Ravenwood

The situation is kind of sad (imo), but I think it connects to the first episode when Buffy was on her own and the viewers see all the displaced teens living on the street. Maybe an intentional society jab? Kind of ties into the adults acting like children too.

Tanya TMS

Thanks Tanya! Yeah, it's a great point. I remember noticing her living conditions as she was introduced but it's kinda settled into the 'norm'. It absolutely should be more addressed by the adults, or even the gang, more than it is. Poor Faith tbh. I'll have to look out for that diary!

Tyler Alexander

Thank you for the kind words, that's incredibly nice ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ˜Š

Tyler Alexander

Oh, bit of both I suppose, but I didn't know it was Tai Chi so thank you ๐Ÿ˜‚

Tyler Alexander

Always happy to hear the kicking connects...ironically ๐Ÿ˜‚ ooh! Always here for more balanced rep ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ

Tyler Alexander

Haha, I will try to be as quick as possible ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ

Tyler Alexander

YES to everything youโ€™ve said. ๐Ÿ˜‚ 12 is definitely gonna be a *good* one ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿฟ A lot of good stuff to unpack this season!

Shannon

Huh. It's interesting. I never really noticed before but Faith's alienation from Buffy actually started in this episode when Buffy didn't want to talk about Angel. Then widened when the gang didn't invite her to their secret clubhouse meeting. I always thought that her sarcastic response to Buffy's "You can trust me" was because she felt betrayed about Buffy hiding Angel but I didn't realise it appeared that early. Cool. Anyway, I'd really love if someone could confront Xander on when, precisely, Buffy made a mess and expected Xander to clean it up. Because Buffy's pretty good about cleaning up her own messes. If we want to talk about someone who causes problems for the group by... oh... I dunno. Casting weird illicit love spells or going over to a Giant Bug Monster's house or falling asleep on guard duty... I'm just saying.

Heathen

Same, but I'm like that with every episode Tyler reviews haha! Especially season 3, it's by far the best in my opinion. Do you know which one this season I'm especially excited to see his reaction to though, given a few of his recent comments? Episode 12.

Waiting room for the next episode ๐Ÿฟ

Shannon

I think that you understand a lot of what season 3 is all about, which is quite impressive because we only are at the third of this season. Maybe you already noticed that but episodes 7 of each season is always an important one. It can move a lot forward the events of the season or be very important for the philosophy or the lore of the show. I find your love of the "kicking" to be very enjoyable by the way^^ Finally I want to answer to one of your questions: Why is Angel training half-naked? For the pleasure of everyone's eyes of course. More seriously, women were a lot sexualized at the time (not that it is not the case anymore) in movies and TV shows and the team behind Buffy chose to do the same thing with male characters (and it will be a reoccurring pattern during all the show). It was the first time I saw a show exploring the female gaze. And, as a young gay teenager, I won't say it didn't have an impact on me either^^

Angel and Buffy are doing Tai Chi as an FYI. I can't tell if you know what it is or are questioning the shows decision to show them doing it lol

Dutchkel

amazing insight- pretty much every single thing you talked about does in fact come into play in the story. some sooner than others.

Eliza Dushku is younger than SMG, but I donโ€™t think Faith is meant to be younger than Buffy, especially in light of a comment she makes in the penultimate episode of this season. Faith also alludes to the fact in episode 3 that she quit school. I think the info points to the fact that she is of an age to make those decisions, likely 18. Not to say that more of an effort should have been made to integrate her into the group, or that one of the more mature adults should have had an onscreen conversation with her on living arrangements. But I think weโ€™re meant to infer that sheโ€™s an independent young adult used to making her own decisions.

Cheryl Coffin

This happened in The Good Place so often, where your insights were so ridiculously poignant while the episode is still able to surprise you with the twist. It's going to be some time before we can fully discuss how on point your analysis here is, but let me just say in advance: Bravo.

Dipper

Please never stop rocking out to the intro and now youโ€™ve got Jarvis joining you!!

Tiffany

The Watchers Council are all English, and emphatically so! Every time they pop up, just remember that Joss Whedon lived in England between ages 15 and 18, attending a posh British boarding school (Winchester College). That might help to explain the way he portrays them and why!

Jack

Hey, Tyler/Jarvis! Another great reaction. I love the fact that you picked up and pointed out that Faith isn't fully part of the friend group and is not going to school. I wanted to make that a bit bigger here and just point out (because it's not a spoiler at this point) that Faith is still very much a teenager too. She's actually a little younger than Buffy. So while you are stopping and considering how Faith is not fully part of the friend group and not going to school... I wanted to throw that extra tid-bit at you too. Why is a traumatized teenage girl staying in seedy cheap motel when two adults know about her (both Giles and Joyce)? Why isn't anyone trying to find her family or learn about her family? Why isn't anyone trying to encourage her to enroll in Sunnydale High? And really why isn't the friend group embracing her more? I think I was waiting to right around this point to mention the diary. There is a lot of comics and graphic novels and stuff outside the show itself that is party of this universe, but for me the most important thing is Faith's diary. It's a book called Go Ask Malice and it's a fast read. It's no longer in spoiler territory because the dairy ends before she reaches Sunnydale. It will give you some of the back-story that the show will never provide. You don't necessarily need the book. I think you are empathetic enough to let your imagination figure out her backstory by yourself. But I still recommend it. Aside from the book and as much as I love Giles, Joyce, Buffy, and the whole gang.... there is so much to unpack with what is going on with them and Faith at this point. And I think that is huge to the storyline. Have a good day.
