2024-09-23 12:17:15 +0000 UTCThis is one of my favourite films - my dad showed it to me when I was maybe 11 or so, and even though I didn't entirely understand it at the time, it still affected me on an emotional level. Appropriately, watching it with him is one of my most treasured memories 💜 I've never seen this version, with the narration, though I knew it existed, and while it's interesting I definitely think I prefer it without the voice-over. It adds to the noir feeling, but I'm not a fan of Ford's delivery of the lines and it seems quite on-the-nose, where the other version is much more melancholic and mysterious, forcing the viewer to piece things together for themselves. Your analysis proves that the narration isn't necessary to pick up what the film's putting down, it just highlights it. Rutger Hauer's performance on the roof with Deckard is spectacular, and one of my favourite individual scenes in all cinema. I really hope you'll consider watching Denis Villeneuve's sequel, 2049. It's a beautiful film which continues to explore the themes of the original in complex and nuanced ways that I think you'll really appreciate.
