Consult about a 40 year old Amazon parrot

Meet Emily and her newly acquired 40 year old Yellow Naped Amazon, Arnold!

Emily and Arnold are not new to each other as he was actually the “office parrot” living at her workplace. Emily consulted with Dave years ago regarding Arnold where Dave gave her some advice on how to try to work with Arnold when she didn’t have any control over his poor diet at the time. ( Fruity Zupreem 24/7). During the last several years she was able to move him into her office and working with what she had was able to teach him some tricks, switch him from peanuts to walnuts for treats and was able to start regular bathing with him.

She provided him with a bigger cage and lots of destructible toys. She does recognize that some mistakes were made though with allowing Arnold out in her office with boxes which led to some hormonal aggression towards anyone else entering her office. Well, now he is home with her and a permanent part of her family! YAY!

Emily is all in on getting his diet transitioned, providing him with proper sleep and taking his training to the next level. We discuss diet conversion, some hormone issues, socialization with her husband, and working on some handling on her hand.

This was great lots of brilliant information now to correct my errors with my two yr old macaw he’s super hormonal A change in a few of his toys he has when he’s out and to the diet too which is in progress I thought the toys would add to his out of cage play and all it has done is making him a bit nippy Silly bird mummy I always knew about petting correctly but didn’t think of toys being triggers too Thank you this was invaluable information x

Thank you for sharing this!!! So helpful to see and get more examples!! My lovebird is very hormonally attached to me, it's been very challenging this season and I had to move to a studio so she wakes up before she should.

Tia

Laura Charon
