Consultation with a Nippy Green Cheek Conure

Meet Tosca, Christoper and their Green Cheek Conure Nacho!

Nacho has had some nippy behavior and has some tendencies to be territorial over his cage. We first cover some foundations in this consultation of diet and sleep to help make some improvements that will better support training.

We talk about using a perch for step ups and the proper permission based approach to this, starting in protected contact for target training to assure that they are able to shape a calm targeting behavior prior to working on it outside the cage and finally working towards regular step ups onto their hands. We go over the steps of teaching a stationing behavior within the cage to avoid aggressive behavior at the food bowls when they are feeding Nacho.

I hope you all find value in watching this consult!

My bird is still very mean. I have changed his food. I have given him plenty of toys to play with. I have done the clicker training. I cannot stop him from being aggressive. I cannot get him out of the cage with my hand or a perch. I now have him walk out of the cage, and I can, sometimes get him on my hand or on the perch but most of the time he’s very aggressive. I don’t know when I first bought the change in diet, but I have been trying to follow your system ever since. It’s discouraging when I see other people petting their bird and putting them on their hand without aggression.

Great consult Kim! I like the advice you gave at the end about halo and the treat bowl.
